A Go Fund Me page has been set up for a family from Groveland who lost everything just days before Christmas. The fire happened last Friday while Ashley and Billy Lantz were at the hospital, vitiating their 8 month old daughter who is suffering from a respiratory virus. Friends say it has already been a hard year for the family of five and that the loss of their home only makes things worse. So far, the page has raised $1,400 toward its $5,000 goal. The Arc of Livingston-Wyoming says it has gotten a state grant to open a new home for people with disabilities. The money—part of 59 million dollars the state is setting aside for new housing options for those whose caregivers are aging or otherwise unable to care for them. Director of Residential living Deborah Tuckerman says its an increasing problem and that the local money will allow a new facility with room for up to six people. Tuckerman hopes to have a site selected and the first residents living in the new home by the end of 2018.
First responders from around the region have heard first hand from someone who answered the call in one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Hornell High graduate Michael Dailey was there when gunfire broke out at a move theater in Aurora Colorado in 2012. The retired police commander told those attending a conference in Hornell that training for the unexpected is key—and that all communities, large and small, should be prepared for the unthinkable.
More credit card skimmers are being found in the Finger Lakes region. Over the past few weeks, the information-stealing devices have been found at a number of area gas stations. They’ve been found at pumps in Monroe, Ontario, Wayne and Seneca counties. The FBI is now involved and is recommending that people either use newer pumps or go inside to pay for gas.
The state department of education wants to remake the school calendar. education officials are asking lawmakers to go from number of school days in the year to number of hours. Right now schools require at least 180 school days. The new plan would schedule students to 900 to 990 hours in a school year.
Flu season is early this year. According to a report by the state health department, flu cases were up in New York by 45-percent from the week before. The health department says the best time to get vaccinated is as soon as possible
