Summer break is over and it’s time to hit the books again at SUNY Geneseo. This is move-in day, so you can looks for lots of activity around the campus as students—and their parents—arrive back in town and start to unpack and get ready for another semester. Faculty and staff are back too—and they will hear from school president Denise Batlles this afternoon. Students get their official welcome back tonight at 6:30, followed by the traditional First Knight Celebration on the College Green.The incoming class of 20-21 has around 1,300 students—picked from the 8,600 or so who applied.
A man from Wesbter is accused of using an online app called Whisper to meet up with a 15-year-old girl. Livingston County deputies say they arrested 41-year-old Jason Korts in the town of York on Wednesday after he drove to meet with the girl. They say the victim met with him once, but the second time he showed up, police were there for the rendezvous instead He’s accused of propositioning the child and sending lewd photos of himself to her. Korts was arraigned in town court , where his bond was set at $20,000.. Sheriff Thomas Dougherty says Korts could also face federal charges.
A close call for a man whose boat flipped on Canandaigua Lake. The man’s sailboat went over Thursday afternoon about 100 yards off shore near the city pier in Canandaigua, but some boaters nearby saw it and came to the rescue.The sailor was taken back to shore where he got a checkup from EMTs and is said to be OK.
The Livonia Library will show off its new look on Saturday. It reopens after an 11 month renovation and expasion, and library officials say patrons should be happy with what they’ll see. It’s a complete makover, with more space and a new design. Library director Frank Sykes says he is excited for the reopening which will feature a ceremony tomorrow afternoon from 1 to 3.
The Pennsylvania teen accused of abandoning her infant in a trash bag in Chemung County is being indicted for attempted murder. Seventeen-year-old Harriette Hoyt was indicted on three felonies yesterday after her baby girl was recently found behind an Elmira home possibly minutes from death. Authorities say her baby was in the bag for more than three days when someone found her. If convicted of the charges, Hoyt faces more than 20 years in prison.
Another sign of the decline a once big name in retail. K-Mart is closing its last two stores in the area—in Victor and Chili. The closings are among 30 stores across the country that are going out of business. K-Mart is owned by Sears, which says its changing its focus to online shopping. Some retail experts say that may be too little too late to save the once iconic chain.
