    # 1 Union Hose 18 # 2 Shay’s 2

Well, the “third time” was NOT the charm for Shay’s on Friday (June 17) night on Knox Street as they tangled with Union Hose with the Dansville Little League Majors crown on the line. The Hosers won the 2 previous meetings during the regular season by scores of 7-1(May 22) & 12-1 (June 1) ….& this time the “tables would tip” in the same direction as Union Hose scored in every inning & capped things off with an 8-run 4th inning en route to an 18-2 victory to sweep Shay’s for the title. Coach Jim Sullivan’s squad received some good pitching from Mike Suydam, some fine defense, & plenty of run-production to back it all up.

Shay’s would score first in the game in the opening inning as a pair of early fielding miscues lead to the first run of the game. Alex Schuster opened with a single & was erased on a force play. Moments later a pick-off play at first went awry when the ball sailed down the right field line allowing the runner to head to 3rd where an errant throw sent Bryce Applin home making it 1-0 Truckers. Union Hose took the lead for good in the bottom half & scored 3 times without virtue of a hit. Mike Suydam, Shane Crandall & Noah Clark all walked to load the bases as a wild pitch plated the tying run. Infield grounders by J.J. Chrissy & Jace Cassata scored the other 2. Shay’s scored a 2-out run in the 2nd while the potential tying run was gunned down at the plate by Union Hose centerfielder Shane Crandall. Kyle Porter walked & with 2 outs Zach Smith also drew a free-ticket. Alex Schuster’s double scored Porter, but the 2nd runner became the 3rd out at the dish on fine throw by the Union Hose centerfielder to end the potential rally.

Union hose took the “defensive momentum” & translated into “offensive production” as the green & white would score 3 more in the 2nd, all with 2 outs. Mike Suydam drew a walk & stole second. Shane Crandall beat out an infield hit. An error ensued allowing one run to score. Then Noah Clark clubbed a triple to drive in another run. The throw to 3rd got away & Clark completed the circuit making it 6-2. Shay’s would load the sacks in the 3rd, but would fail to score as the 3rd out was recorded at the plate when a pitch got away, but catcher Devin Douglas flipped to Mike Suydam who tagged the sliding baserunner out to end the threat. Union Hose scored 3 more in the 3rd…J.J. Chrissy doubled & then Jace Cassata singled. A pair of errors & a bases loaded walk to Devin Douglas pushed another one home extending the lead to 9-2.

In the 4th Union Hose sent 12 hitters to the plate in scoring 8 times to put the wraps on the trophy. Two hit batsmen & a pair of walks forced a run home as Peyton Mays picked up an rbi. Mike Suydam’s single scored one & a wild pitch scored another. Shane Crandall came up with 2 on & 2 outs & crushed a shot over the left centerfield fence onto Knox Street for a 3-run homer. The Hosers would regenerate the rally with 2 outs as Allen Luxon forced in a run with a walk & then Jace Cassata’s 2-run single would end it with the lopsided final 18-2 as Union Hose claimed the Major League Title !

Mike Suydam notched the win on the hill for Union Hose (10-3) as he went the distance allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 2 hits….struck out 9 & walked 6. He also had a hit, drove in a run & scored 3 times while stealing 2 bases as well. Shane Crandall was 2-3 with a 3-run homer & scored a trio of times….Noah Clark 2-2 with a triple, scored 3 runs & drove one run in…Seth Malone & Peyton Mays each scored a run…J.J. Chrissy 2-4, knocking in a run & scored twice…Allen Luxon scored a run & drove one in…Jace Cassata 2-3 with 3 rbis & scored 2 runs…Eli Swyers also scored a pair of runs in the victory. Union Hose visits Wayland Lions at Victory Park on Tuesday (June 21) to decide the “combined” Major League Championship. Game time is at 6pm.

Shays ended their season (5-9) with a trio of hurlers heading to the hill as Taylor Wolfanger started, & then Bryce Applin & Jake Smith each spent time on the mound. Offensively for coach Brian Applin’s club, Alex Schuster went 2-2 with a double & drove in a run. Applin would scored one run & Kyle Porter scored the other.
