Wayland-Cohocton 3 Dansville 2
Rivals Wayland-Cohocton & Dansville took their “backyard brawl” to Frontier Field in Rochester on Wednesday (May 4) night to battle under the lights at the “big house”. On a breezy night with the wind blowing in, it would be the pitchers who would take center stage as the Golden Eagles plated a trio of runs in the 3rd inning & made it stand up for a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Mustangs.
A couple of walks, an error on a pick-off play & a passed ball put Dansville in front 1-0 in the second inning. A trio of walks, an error & a Hunter Bressler single would cap Way-Coh’s scoring of all 3 runs in the top of the third to grab the lead for good. The Mustangs got one of the runs back in the bottom half but could get no closer.
The game saw Golden Eagles rightie Hunter Bressler go the distance in holding Dansville to 3 hits while striking out 2 & walking 4. Bressler would also pick-off 2 Mustang runners in the game as Coach Steve Wager noted, ” that was huge, especially in a 1-run game like this one. Anytime you can pick up an out & eliminate a baserunner, it takes a little extra pressure off the defense for a couple of outs.” The Golden Eagles also welcomed back Mike Schumacher to the infield following an injury earlier in the season. Wager added, “that was also a real plus for us to have Mike back in there as he was in the middle of a 4-6-3 double play that stopped a potential Dansville rally late in the game.”
For Wayland-Cohocton (4-8) Hunter Bressler had a 2-4 day at the plate & drove in a run while Andrue Holbrook, Eythan Briggs, & Michael Schumacher had hits for the maroon & gold. Anthony Kanaval pitched well for Dansville & deserved a better fate as he threw a complete game allowing just 5 hits while striking out 12 in the setback. The 2 teams meet for the final time in the regular season on Tuesday (May 10) at Babcock Park in Dansville with first pitch at 4:30pm.
