Although the boys baseball game on Monday (May 2) was postponed only a few hundred yards away, the girls weathered the storm as the route 21 rivalry unfolded in high school softball as Wayland-Cohocton scored in every inning except the 2nd & 7th to defeat Hornell by a final score of 11-4 in Livingston County Division One play.

Way-Coh took the early lead, Hornell shaved away a part of the advantage, but Golden Eagles coach Dave Stewart’s squad kept the heat on the Red Raider defense & chipped away continuing to extend the lead for the eventual 11-4 win. The maroon & gold got going in the first as Mikaela Nielsen walked, stole second & then Jessie Hammers walked. Ashlee Schumacher & Hanna James each doubled to drive in a run & then Madison Gregorius single made it 3-0. Hornell pushed a couple runs across in their half of the 2nd cutting into the Eagles lead. Way-Coh scored once in the 4th when Madison Gregorius singled, swiped second & scored on Shailynn Celentano’s hit. Three more runs scored in the 4th as singles by Mia Forsythe, Mikaela Nielsen & Jessie Hammers loaded the bases. Ashlee Schumacher’s sacrifice fly score one of the runs, while another scored on a fielders choice by Hannah James. Way-Coh tacked on 2 more in the 5th as Alex Button & Hannah Recktenwald each singled & stole a base. Mia Forsythe’s single brought one in & the other scored on an infield grounder by Jessie Hammers. Wayland-Cohocton finished the scoring in the 6th when Hannah James reached on an infield error. Madison Gregorius followed with her 3rd hit of the day. When Alex Button’s single to center was misplayed, both runs came racing home in the 11-4 final.
Ashlee Schumacher notched the win for Wayland-Cohocton ( 12-2, 5-0) as she worked 6 strong innings allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits, while striking out 4 & walking 2. Alex Button came on to strikeout the side in a scoreless 7th. Offensively for Way-Coh  Mikaela Nielsen 2-3 with a triple. scored twice, & stole one base…Kaylan Curtin scored a run….Jessie Hammers added a hit, scored 2 runs & drove one in…Ashlee Schumacher had a double, a sacrifice & 2 rbis…Hannah James had a double, drove in a run & scored twice…Madison Gregorius was 3-4 scoring twice & stole a base….Shailynn Celentano had a hit & drove in a run…Alex Button 2-4 with 2 steals & scored once…Hannah Recktenwald had a hit, stole a base & scored a run, while Mia Forsythe was 2-4 in the victory. Wayland-Cohocton hosts Dansville on Wednesday (May 4th) at  4:30pm.
