# 2 Wayland-Cohocton 15 # 7 Dansville 4
On Wednesday (May 18) afternoon, the question would be “will the 3rd time be a charm” for the Dansville Lady Mustangs? The answer was a resounding “NO” as Wayland-Cohocton completed a convincing sweep of their rivals in the quarter-final round of the Class B-2 Section V Softball Tournament at “the Nest” as the Golden Eagles swooped in for a 15-4 win at home to move onto the semi-finals. Wayland-Cohocton had won both of the previous regular season meetings by a large margin, & on this sunny day on the hill…things wouldn’t be any different.
Coach Dave Stewart’s team was seeking to get back on the winning track after being derailed by Livonia on the final day of the regular season after the Golden Eagles had won 16 in a row. The maroon & gold were determined to re-establish themselves, & they did so…very quickly ! Wayland-Cohocton would score 13 of their 15 runs in the opening 3 innings. The Golden Eagles would “bat around” in each of those first 3 innings of play as well. Way-Coh plated 4 in the first inning as Jessie Hammers singled & stole 2 bases. Following Ashlee Schumacher’s walk, Hannah James doubled both runs home. An infield error kept the inning alive as Shailynn Celentano & Alex Button would also drive in runs with hits in the first. In the second Mikaela Nielsen ripped a triple in the gap in right-center to lead things off. Jessie Hammers singled her home. Another infield error would prolong the inning. With the sacks jammed, Shailynn Celentano singled home a run. Hannah Recktenwald was hit-by-a-pitch to force one more in , while a walk to Mia Forsythe pushed another one in making it 8-0. It was a “ditto” all over again in the 3rd…. Jessie Hammers singled, stole second & later scored on a hit by Madison Gregorius. An error & a wild pitch pushed 2 more runners into scoring position. Hits by Mia Forsythe, Mikaela Nielsen & Jessie Hammers helped in manufacturing 5 more runs making it 13-0.
Dansville finally got on the board in the top of the 4th when Maddie Farrell singled & swiped second. An infield grounder pushed her to 3rd. The Golden Eagles would get the runner hung-up between 3rd & home, but the throw to the plate was dropped allowing the run to score. Wayland-Cohocton scored their final 2 runs in the 5th when Jessie Hammers walked, went to second on a wild pitch & scored on Ashlee Schumacher’s double down the left field line. An infield hit & an error put runners at 2nd & 3rd. Finally, an infield grounder by Karlee Chizuk would push the final run across. Dansville scored 3 more times in the 6th as Katie Applin beat out a bunt single. Sarah Cotton singled & then Maddie Farrell walked to load the bases. A fielders choice brought one run home & Hannah Rex’s single produced the final 2 runs of the game…as Wayland-Cohocton would eliminate Dansville to the tune of 15-4.
For Wayland-Cohocton (18-3) Ashlee Schumacher earned the win in the circle pitching 5 strong innings, giving up 1 hit, an unearned run, struck out 6 & walked just 1. Alex Button threw the final 2 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1 & walking 1. Offensively the maroon & gold had 16 hits in the victory as Mikaela Nielsen was 2-4 with a triple & scored a run….Jessie Hammers 4-4 with 4 stolen bases, scored 3 runs & drove in 2…Ashlee Schumacher had a double, an rbi & scored a run…Hannah James 1-3 with double, 2 rbis & scored 3 runs….Shianne Chapman had a hit & scored twice…Madison Gregorius 2-4 with 2 rbis & scored 3 runs…Karlee Chizuk drove in a run…..Shailynn Celentano 2-3 with 3 rbis & scored a run….Alex Button added a hit, & drove in a run…Hannah Recktenwald 1-3 with an rbi & scored one…& Mia Forsythe had a hit & drove in a pair of runs. Wayland-Cohocton takes on either Leroy or North Rose-Wolcott on Monday at a site & a time to be determined. Dansville ( 6-13 ) ended their season as Natasha King threw the fist inning & 2/3’s & was tagged with the loss. Brooke Hartson appeared in relief working 4 1/3 innings. At the plate for Dansville Sarah Cotton was 1-3 & scored a run…Maddie Farrell 1-2 & scored a pair of runs & stole a base…Jill Pero drove in a run….Hannah Rex 1-3 with 2 rbis….Katie Applin 2-3, scored a run & stole a base.
