Wayland-Cohocton 15 Dansville O
The Wayland-Cohocton softball squad completed a sweep of rival Dansville on Wednesday (May 4) afternoon at “the Nest” as the Golden Eagles soared to a 15-0 whitewash of the Mustangs. Way-Coh won the first match-up handily at Babcock Park back on the 11th of April & this contest was quite similar in its outcome. The Golden Eagles would manage to plate runs in every inning except the 2nd as the host team would score 4 times in the bottom of the 6th to take the “mercy rule” win just before the rains came on top of the hill.
Dansville would see Abby Kuhn club a double over the head of the centerfielder in the top of the first, but the Mustangs would strand the baserunner. In the bottom half Wayland-Cohocton would initiate the scoring by pushing 2 runs across in a frame that had the potential of being a “huge” inning ! Mikaela Nielsen walked & stole second to start things. Jessie Hammers beat out a bunt single, & then Ashlee Schumacher would get hit by a pitch that would load the bases. Hannah James drilled a 2-1 pitch solidly to left delivering a pair of runs. Madison Gregorius would re-load the bases with an infield hit. When it looked like “the dyke was about to break” Dansville’s defense stepped up behind starter Natasha King. Shailynn Celentano lined into a twin-killing as Dansville 2nd sacker Katie Applin picked off the line drive & then fired it over to 3rd where Bri Henchen doubled up the runner there. King then struck out the next hitter to get out what could have been a “big inning.” The Mustangs would then proceed to leave 2 more runners on base in the 2nd & the 3rd. Wayland-Cohocton extended their lead on the legs of Jessie Hammers in the 3rd when the “ultra fleet-footed” shortstop led off with a “bunt double.” (That terminology is exclusive to Jessie Hammers. ) Jessie deadened a bunt & clearly beat the throw to first. As Hammers approached first she spotted the 2nd baseman rerturning from trying to cover first. Nobody was covering second so Jessie alertly went from home to second! Moments later she would “amaze” the crowd again. On a 1-2 pitich Ashlee Schumacher lifted a fly ball to left centerfield. The ball was caught & Jessie Hammers tagged up & sped from second base all the way home on the play, making it 3-0 with a burst of speed ! Who else could do that, but Jessie? She takes them “2 at a time”! The Golden Eagles opened things up when they batted around in the 4th to score 5 more runs. Alex Button led off with a single, stole 2nd & went to 3rd on a wild pitch. Mia Forsythe’s single would bring her home. Singles by Mikaela Nielsen & Jessie Hammers loaded the bases. Ashlee Schumacher’s 2nd sacrifice fly of the game scored another run. A wild pitch & an error allowed another run to cross the plate. Finally Alex Button’s 2nd hit of the inning made it 8-0. In the 5th Way-Coh scored 3 more as Ashlee Schumacher clubbed a 2-run double & then an error scored another run. Finally in the 6th the Eagles had some help as Dansville walked 4 batters in the inning which was interspersed with rbi hits by Kayla Curtin, Jessie Hammers, & Ashlee Schumacher. The final walk with the bases loaded to Shianne Chapman forced home the winning run completing the 15-0 shutout.
For Wayland-Cohocton (13-2) its their 11th straight victory since coming north back in early April. The Golden Eagles pounded out 18 hits against a pair of Dansville hurlers.
