Union Hose 7 Shay’s 1
Solid pitching & defense seemed to be the secret of success for coach Jim Sullivan’s Union Hose team on Thursday (May 19) as they defeated Shay’s 7-1 in Dansville little league baseball action. Union Hose took control of things after scoring 5 times in the first inning. A couple of walks set the stage as Jace Cassata belted a double, while Shane Crandall, J.J. Chrissy, & Jacob O’Toole each stroked hits in the rally to put the Hosers in front. Sound defense & good pitching was the key to the rest on both sides of the coin. Union Hose added to their lead in the 4th as a pair of walks set the stage for a double by Jace Cassata & a Karter Everman single made it a 7-0 advantage. Shay’s would score their lone run in the top of the 5th when Alex Schuster doubled & later scored.
Union Hose’s hurlers were strong as starter Mike Suydam threw the first 2 2/3’s innings of scoreless baseball while giving up 3 hits, walking 2 & striking out 8. Shane Crandall worked the last 3 1/3 innings yielding 1 run on 2 hits. He struck out 7 & walked 4. On the offensive side for the Hosers…Jace Cassata 2-3 with a pair of doubles, scored a run & stole a base…Karter Everman 2-3 with 3 stolen bases…Shane Crandall had a hit, stole a base & scored a run…Seth Malone scored once with a couple of stolen bases…J.J. Chrissy 1-2 & scored a run…Eli Swyers scored a run & had a one stolen base…Jacob O’Toole 1-2 with a steal…& Devin Douglas added 2 stolen bases.
Bryce Applin threw the first inning & was relieved by Taylor Wolfanger who pitched the last 4 frames giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 9 & walking 7.
Shays was limited to 5 hits in the contest. Bryce Applin was 2-3 with pair of doubles…Alex Schuster had a double & scored Shay’s only run…Taylor Wolfanger & Mackenzie Boser had the other hits for coach Brian Applin’s club.
