The Keshequa boys baseball team played a pair on Thursday (May 12) at the “Wig Wam on Walnut” & it came down to the last swing of the bat as the night ended with a thrilling Indians victory, & with it, the Livingston County Divsion III title. Coach Ron Macomber’s club would play a pair on this night as the emotions swung back & forth all night. Bath would batter Keshequa’s pitching in the opener, meanwhile in the 2nd game against Cal-Mum, the game went back & forth throughout before Colton Davis’ single in the bottom of the 7th secured the win & the D-III title as well.
Bath-Haverling 18 Keshequa 6
In the Livingston County cross-over contest visiting Bath took the early lead, but coach Ron Macomber’s club would come right back to take the lead. However, for the Indians the only runs the orange & black would score would be in that first inning. The Rams continued putting up crooked numbers throughout the middle innings in soundly defeating the Indians by an 18-6 final. Bath plated 3 in the top of the first, but the Indians stayed focused & scored a half-dozen to respond in a big way! With one out in the bottom of the first Keshequa would piece together 6 straight hits, a hit batsman, a sacrifice fly & then another extra-base hit that capped the rally. Coach Macomber had 4 games in 4 days & attempted to “mix & match” his arms to keep some key pitchers ready for the divisional games. In this game Bath teed-off on everybody as the scored 4 runs to take the lead for good in the 3rd, & then had 5-run innings in both the 4th & 7th to seal the 18-6 final. Keshequa highlights in the contest included Austin Galton going 2-3 with a double & scored once…Brock Allen had a double to drive in a run & scored one….Nick Wood was 2-4 & Dustyn Zangerle was 1-3 with a pair of rbis. Colton Davis, Bryce Bennett, Travis Cotton & Austin Schmidt would all add hits in the setback.
Keshequa 10 Cal – Mum 9
The Indians “got back on the horse” in the 2nd game as they had the D-III title on the line. This game went back & forth so many times you needed “Dramamine” while watching this battle between the Indians & Red Raiders unfold. It seemed like every time Keshequa would score, it would trigger Cal-Mum to match the challenge. Keshequa would get the “last laugh” in the 7th on Colton Davis’ game-winning single for a 10-9 win!
Keshequa opened the scoring in the home first when Austin Galton ripped a 2-out triple & scored on a wild pitch. Cal-Mum would tie it with one in the 2nd. The Indians scored another single run in the 2nd to regain the lead on a run-scoring single by Dustyn Zangerle. A homer in the Red Raider 3rd would tie it a 2-2. The Indians got another run in the 3rd when Colton Davis doubled & Brock Allen picked him up with a single giving the Indians another momentary lead. Cal Mum scored the tying run in the top of the 4th. In the bottom of the 5th it finally looked like coach Ron Macomber’s crew would open up some “breathing room” when they scored 4 times! After Austin Galton & Brock Allen reached base, Bryce Bennett would double them both home. Collyn White singled home a run, & later Nick Wood came home on an Austin Schmidt sac-fly. Lo & behold, didn’t the Red Raiders come back? Surprise!! The Red Raiders didn’t quite tie it yet as they plated 3 runs in the top of the 6th. The orange & black scored 2 more in the bottom half as Austin Galton doubled, Brock Allen single & both raced home on a Bryce Bennett hit. Cal-Mum was back again! The maroon & grey would score 3 times in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 9-9 ! The Nunda-Dalton gang would take advantage of being “at home” by plating the game-winner in the home half of the 7th. Collyn White singled & Austin Schmidt followed it with a bunt hit. A one-out walk would load the bases, putting the pressure on the Red Raider defense. With the infield-in, Colton Davis ripped a single to give the Indians, the win, & the title!!
Austin Galton started on the hill for the Indians pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing only 4 earned runs, 10 hits, while striking out 4 & walking 4. Brock Allen notched the win by pitching 2/3’s of an inning giving up just 1 hit. Offensively for the Indians, who clinched the D-3 title with the win….Bryce Bennett was 4-4, Austin Galton 2-3, Dustyn Zangerle 2-3 & Collyn White 2-4 as the Indians finished the regular season at 12-6, 7-1 in the league. Keshequa winds up the # 5 seed in Class C-2 & will host 12th seeded Dundee in first round Sectional action on Wednesday (May 18) at 4:30pm.
