Golden Eagles Grab Way-Coh Tournament Title



When you host a softball tournament at your home venue, a good philosophy is to “never let the trophy leave your back yard.” Coach Dave Stewart & his Wayland-Cohocton varsity softball team took that as a “motto” & lived well by it on Saturday (May 7) as they captured both ends of their annual “round robin” tournament at ” the Nest.” The Golden Eagles would blank Perry-Mt.Morris in the opener before securing the title game against West Irondequoit.

In the opener Wayland-Cohocton would take an early lead, & then blew the game wide-open in the 3rd inning by scoring 7 times en route to a 15-0 whitewash of the Blue Jackets. In the first Jessie Hammers singled, stole second, went to 3rd on a wild pitch & later scored on an infield error.  In the second Way-Coh tacked on 4 more runs as Alex Button opened with a single & stole a base, Hannah Rectenwald single one run home & stole second. Mikaela Nielsen drove in a run with a hit & then Jessie Hammers did the same. In the 3rd the Golden Eagles would “bat around” as they put the game on ice with 7 big runs crossing the plate. Hannah James led off with a single & then  a pair of wild pitches moved courtesy runner Shianne Chapman all the way over to 3rd. An infield grounder by Madison Gregorius scored the run. Alex Button re-started the fire with a single. Hannah Recktenwald clubbed a triple to drive in a run.  Mia Forsythe would reach base while a run scored on a passed ball on a third strike. An infield error kept things going & then Jessie Hammers singled in one run…Ashlee Schumacher’s double drove in 2 more, & then Hannah James kept the inning alive with her 2nd hit of the inning. This one was an rbi-double & the Golden Eagles pumped the lead up to 12-0. In the 4th Alex Button got things started again with a single & a stolen base. Hannah Recktenwald singled, & then Ayslinn Holbrook singled to knock in a run. A walk & an error would eventually end the game as the Golden Eagles wound up with a lopsided 15-0 win.

Alex Button went the distance on the slab to get the win as she allowed just a 2nd inning single while striking out 4 & walking only 1. Offensively for Way-Coh Mikaela Nielsen was 1-3 with 2 runs scored, Kayla Curtin scored 2 runs…Jessie Hammers 3-3 with 3 stolen bases & an rbi…Ashlee Schumacher had a double, 2 rbis, scored a run….Hannah James 2-4 with a double, 3 rbis, & scored a run….Madison Gregorius had a hit that drove in a run…Alex Button 3-3 with 2 steals & 2 runs…Hannah Recktenwald 3-3 with triple & a stolen base….Mia Forsythe scored a run….& Ayslinn Holbrook was 1-1 with an rbi.

The maroon & gold came up ‘big’ in the title game at high noon on Saturday as they would score in every inning except the 2nd as they toppled  West Irondequoit 9-1 to lay claim to the hardware. Once again the Golden Eagles grabbed the lead in the first. Jessie Hammers again singled, swiped her way around to 3rd where she would score on a wild pitch.  Two more runs came home in the 3rd as Mikaela Nielsen worked out a walk, Jessie Hammers legged out a slap single to the infield & then stole second. Ashlee Schumacher helped herself by ripping a double that drove in 2 runs. Way-Coh pulled away with 4 in the 4th when  Hannah Recktenwald doubled.  Mia Forsythe sacrificed the runner to 3rd where Mikalea Nielsen’s single brought the first run across. Jessie Hammers singled. Ashlee Schumacher then tripled to clear the bases & give Wayland-COhocton a sizeable 7-0 advantage. Single runs would score in the 5th & 6th. In # 5 Alex Button doubled & then Hannah Recktenwald singled her home. in the 6th Ashlee Schumacher singled, went to 2nd on an error, then scored on Madison Gregorius’ grounder to the infield as the Eagles soared for a 9-1 win in the championship game!

Ashlee Schumacher went all the way for the win in the circle allowing just 4 hits while striking out 4 & walking 4. At the plate for Wayland-Cohocton (15-2) they would connect for 14 hits in the victory.  Mikaela Nielsen 2-3 with 2 runs scored & a stolen base…Jessie Hammers 4-4 with 3 runs scored…Ashlee Schumacher 3-4 with a double, triple, 5 rbis & scored twice…Shailynn Celentano 2-4….Alex Button had a double & scored a run…Hannah Recktenwald 2-3 with a double…& Mia Forsythe had a pair of sacrifices.  The maroon & gold wrap up the regular season with a trip to Geneseo on Monday (May 9), & then host Bath on Wednesday (May 11), & Livonia on Friday (May 13th) . All 3 games are  4:30 pm starts.
