Fielding Miscues Fuel Bath’s Win Over Way-Coh

Bath-Haverling 7 Wayland-Cohocton 2

A game that should have been a pitching duel at “the Nest” on Wednesday (May 11) would up being much larger margin that one would have imagined as trio of Way-Coh errors would led to 4 unearned runs as Bath bested the Golden Eagles in high school baseball action by a final score of 7-2. One of the few earned runs put the Rams in front in the first inning when Elliott Hillman walked & stole second & then Connor Strong also drew a base on balls. Griffin Yastremski singled to load the bases. Stefan Ordway stepped in & hit a one-hop smash to third where Mike Feinman made a nice play & touched up at 3rd for a force play as the first run of the game crossed the plate. A pair of throwing errors in the 2nd put Bath runners at the corners with nobody out. Golden Eagles hurler Eythan Briggs struck the next hitter out….which “should” have been the 3rd out. With 2 away Elliott Hillman singled one run home, while the Rams would work the “double-steal” into a 3rd run making it 3-0.

The Golden Eagles would plate their first run in the home half of the 2nd when Trevor Milliman walked & raced home on a double by Pat O’Neal. Bath countered & took advantage of a third throwing error by Wayland-Cohocton in the 4th as they had a runner at 2nd with one out. Dylan Marshall laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over. Ethan Buckley was hit by a pitch, & then Elliott Hillman boomed a double to the alley in right centerfield chasing both runs home & extending the lead to 5-1. In the 5th, Wayland-Cohocton scored again as Pat O’Neal singled to right & then scored on Jack Gibson’s double. Bath scored single runs in the 6th & 7th to seal the deal. In # 6 Matt Binkowski doubled the opposite way. Dylan Marshall’s infield grounder pushed the runner to 3rd & then Ethan Buckley lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score the run. In the 7th Connor Strong led off with a hit & then swiped second. He tagged & moved to 3rd on a long fly ball to the right field corner. Stefan Ordway then hit a sacrifice fly to center to complete the scoring.

Bath (9-5) used a complete game effort from sophomore right-hander Noah Hockaday to get the win. He yielded 2 earned runs on just 3 hits while striking out 3 & walking 1. The navy & white saw Elliott Hillman goe 2-3 with a double & 3 rbis while stealing a base. Connor Strong was 1-3 with a steal & a run scored. Griffin Yastremski added a hit, while Stefan Ordway had a sacrifice & drove in a pair of runs. Chris McDonnell scored a run. Matt Binkowski was 1-3 with a double & scored 3 times. Dylan Marshall also added a sacrifice as well.
For Wayland-Cohocton (5-12) Eythan Briggs deserved a better fate as he worked 6 innings allowing just 4 hits, 6 runs, only 2 earned while striking out 2 & walking 3. Trevor Milliman came on for an inning giving up a run on one hit & struck out one. For the limited Eagles offense Pat O’Neal was 2-3 with a double, drove in a run & scored one…Jack Gibson was 1-2 with a double & an rbi….while Trevor Milliman also scored a run for Way-Coh. The Golden Eagles wrap up their regular season with a trip to Wellsville on Thursday (May 12) & they host Livonia on Friday (May 13).
