#1 Bath-Haverling 7 #2 Livonia 1
Is the 3rd time “a charm”? Not this time! Livonia & Bath had squared off twice during the regular season during Livingston County Division One play. The Rams had won both games by one run 4-3, & 1-0. Bulldogs skipper Karen Schuster had hoped this time would be different. It was….but not in the way she had hoped. This time a few Livonia fielding miscues would lead to 5 unearned runs & the Rams claimed the Class B-1 title at Wayland-Cohocton by a score of 7-1 on Wednesday night (May 25).
Things went sour early for Livonia as in the first inning with 2 outs Audrey Minton singled & Lily Gfeller reached on a infield error putting runners at the corners. A bunt try back to the pitcher resulted in a low throw on which a “safe” call was given which would have given the Bulldogs the lead & had them still batting following the score. An appeal was made & the call was later reversed, which resulted in the 3rd out, taking a run off the board & also shut down Livonia’s chances in the first. Bath took advantage of the reverse in fortunes, & saw the early momentum move in their direction as well. Senior Molly Stewart opened on the slab for the Bulldogs & pair of errors would open the door for 3 unearned runs to score in the Rams initial at bat. Alex Siebert walked & moved 2nd on a wild pitch. The next batter bounced an infield grounder that was fielded cleanly, but the throw was dropped at first allowing both runners to reach. A bouncer to short was then thrown away allowing the first run of the game to come home as Bath had runners at 2nd & 3rd. Kyara Wilson’s infield grounder to 3rd plated the 2nd run, & a double by Morgan Olin drove in the other as the Rams quickly grabbed a 3 run lead. After going out 1-2-3, Bath was back at the plate & scored 2 more unearned runs to add to their lead. Mykaela Webster reached on an infield error. With one out Alex Siebert lined a clean single to left putting runners at 1st & 2nd. Jillian Farmer singled down the right field line & when the ball shot by the outfielder one run scored. Mikaela Bryzynski’s infield smash to 3rd turned into a 5-3 put-out, but another run scored on the play making it a 5-0 Bath lead. The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the top of the 3rd when Morgan Hyde led off, stole 2 bases & then scored on a 2-out single by Audrey Minton. Eighth grader Vanessa Galbraith came on to pitch & shut down the Rams attack over the next 3 innings, but the Bulldogs couldn’t get the clutch hit to make anything happen. In the top of the 6th the orange & blue would load the bases on an errant throw, an infield single by Danielle Bosch, & a strikeout on which the 3rd strike got away to the backstop loading the bases with 2 outs. But the inning would end when Mikaela Bryzynski reached back & struck out the next hitter leaving the sacks jammed. Bath took that momentum to the plate with them to score their only 2 earned runs of the ballgame in the 6th. Kyara Wilson & Morgan Olin stung back-to-back doubles to drive one run in. A wild pitch would allow the final run to score. In the top of the 7th Livonia would get a one out bunt single by Rachel Hoh. Following a foul pop up, Audrey Minton hit a liner toward right field, but Bath 2nd sacker Morgan Olin ranged over & made a nice grab. As the ball disappeared in to the glove, so did Livonia’s hopes of moving on. Bath won it 7-1 to claim the Class B-1 title & will battle B-2 champions from Leroy in the state-qualifier.
For Bath ( 18-4) received a complete game pitching performance from right handed hurler Mikaela Bryzynski who scattered 6 hits while striking out 9 without a walk. She gave up just one earned run in notching the win. At the plate she also drove in a run. Also for coach Don Long’s club Alex Siebert was 1-2 & scored 2 runs…Jillian France 1-2 scoring a run…Kyara Wilson had a double, drove in a run & scored one…Morgan Olin 2-3 with a pair of doubles & drove in 2 runs…Mykayla Webster also scored a run for the Rams. For Livonia (14-6) Molly Stewart tossed the first 2 innings giving up 5 runs, none of them earned, while yielding 4 hits, striking out 1 & walking 1. Vanessa Galbraith pitched 4 strong innings in relief giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits, struck out 6 & walked one. Offensively for the Bulldogs Rachel Hoh was 1-4….Audrey Minton 2-4 & drove in a run….Danielle Bosch & Vanessa Galbraith were each 1-3….& Morgan Hyde was 1-3, stole 2 bases & score a run.
