Wayland-Cohocton 27 York 3
Call it a “home & home” series, but neither contest was too pretty from a competitive standpoint as Wayland-Cohocton hosted York at “the Nest” on Tuesday (Apr. 19) in the team’s 2nd straight match-up in cross-over fashion in high school softball. The opener at the “Round Table in Retsof” was “no contest” & this one followed suit as well. You could almost say that Way-Coh was “born with baserunners” in this one as well. In addition to the 19 hits the maroon & gold pounded out, they received 16 walks & 3 hit batters. In other words, 19 additional baserunners! (and they only batted 4 times in the game.) Golden Eagles coach Dave Stweart stated, ” well, I guess you could say it was one of those games where everybody got plenty of playing time, & got some quality swings in as well. We were simply playing station-to-station softball. We did have a few “singles” that rolled all the way to the fence today.”
It didn’t take long for things to get out of control as Way-Coh plated 11 runs in the first inning & another dozen in the second. The Golden Eagles basically “batted around” nearly twice in each of those 2 innings. In the first Ashlee Schumacher’s run-scoring double opened the flood gates. Hannah James, Shailynn Celentano, Alex Button, & Mikaela Nielsen all had run-scoring hits in the inning, while Hannah Recktenwald’s infield grounder also plated a run. Then in the second, Jessie Hammers’ doulbe brought home a couple to get things going. Ashlee Schumacher, Madison Gregorius, Kayla Curtin, & Shailynn Celentano all drove in runs with hits once again; York managed to scrape away 2 runs in the 4th & another in the 5th, but it would be a far cry from what the purple & gold would need to win this one.
Way-Coh (6-2) sent 3 hurlers to the hill as Ashlee Schumacher threw the first 2 frames allowing one hit, while striking out 4 & walking 2. Alex Button tossed 2 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits while fanning 2. Lexi Bowers pitched the 7th allowing an unearned run on 1 hit. Offensively for the Golden Eagles…Mikaela Nielsen was 2-3 with a double, drove in 2 runs, scored 4 times & stole a base…Jessie Hammers finished 1-1 with 5 runs scored, a double,a stolen base & a pair of rbis…Ashlee Schumacher 3-4 with a double & 3 rbis…Hannah James 2-2 with a pair of rbis, 3 runs scored & a stolen base…Madison Gregorius 2-4 & scored run…Shailynn Celentano 3-3 with 2 rbis & scored twice…Shianne Chapman 1-2 & scored 5 runs…Alex Button 3-4 with 2 rbis & scored twice…Lexi Bowers 1-2 with a run scored…Mia Forsythe drew a couple of walks..& Kayla Curtin 1-2 with a double & scored 4 runs. Way-Coh visits Keshequa & Bath on Wednesday & Thursday respectively. York’s offense was let by Bekah Vorsey who had a triple & drove in a run for the purple & gold.
