Wayland-Cohocton Girls Hand Lioness’ First Loss

The Wayland-Cohocton softball squad dealt Wellsville (3-1) thier first setback of the year on Wednesday (Apr. 13) afternoon at “the Nest” as the Eagles scored 5 times in the middle 2 innings to break a tie & went on to a 7-4 win at home. The Golden Eagles scored first in the opening inning as “the speed factor” entered into the run as Jessie Hammers legged out a bunt single. When she attempted to steal, the throw went wild & Hammers hustled all the way home giving Way-Coh a very quick 1-0 edge. The lady Lions tied it in the top of the 3rd when Sarah Stevens opened with a hit & later scored on a single by Jordyn Pettit. Wayland-Cohocton took the lead for good in the bottom half of the 3rd when they plated a trio of tallies. Mikaela Nielsen opened with a single & went to 2nd on a passed ball. Jessie Hammers single & stole second. Ashlee Schumacher’s double cleared the bases giving the Golden Eagles the lead. Following a Hannah James sacrifice, Madison Gregorius singled home another run & the Eagles held a 4-1 lead. Way-Coh tacked on 2 more in the 4th when Mikaela Nielsen ripped a 2-out triple. After Jessie Hammers walked, Ashlee Schumacher cleared the bases again ! This time it was a 2-run double. Rayanna Anderson’s single plated a Wellsville run following an error in the 5th. The Lions scratched away 2 more in the 6th on a double by Amy Lorshbaugh & a triple by Riley Hoffman, but Way-Coh scored one more in the bottom half when Mikaela Nielsen reached on an error & eventually scored on a wild pitch making the final 7-4.

Wayland-Cohocton (4-2) saw Ashlee Schumacher get the win in the circle with a complete game effort. She struck out 7, allowed 8 hits & 3 earned runs while walking just one. She not only received help from the Way-Coh offense, but the defense was anchored by catcher Mia Forsythe who threw out 3 baserunners during the game for the Golden Eagles! Offensively for the maroon & gold….Mikaela Nielsen 2-4 with a triple & 3 runs scored….Jessie Hammers 2-2 with 3 runs scored, a stolen base & a sacrifice…Ashlee Schumacher aided her own cause going 3-4 with a double & 4 rbis…Shianne Chapman scored a run…Hannah James 2-3 with a double & a sacrifice…Madison Gregorius 1-3 with a stolen base & an rbi…Shailynn Celentano 2-4 with a stolen base. Alex Button & Hannah Recktenwald were each 1-3 in the victory. Wayland-Cohocton visits York on Friday (Apr. 15) at 4:30pm.
