Alexander 7 Dansville 6
I think its called “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?” That pretty much summed up Tuesday (Apr. 19th) afternoon’s make-up game at Babcock Park against visiting Alexander from the Genesee Region. Dansville right hander Derek Wampole was cruising along with a lead, when the Trojans came from a 4-1 deficit to score 6 times in the top of the 7th to take the lead. Dansville’s 7th inning rally fell just a bit short, as 5 unearned runs would tell the tale in a 7-6 heartbreaker at “the Corral.”
Strangely enough, Dansville had won a pair of “miracle finishes” in their last at bats earlier in the year by that same score, on this day the books began to “balance.” Coach Tom Hober’s club had a great chance to put the game away early as the Mustangs left 7 men on base in the first 3 innings & only managed to score one run. In the 3rd the Mustangs drew first blood when Anthony Kanaval walked & stole second. Ryan Conklin stroked a 1-out single. A fielders choice cut down a runner at the plate. Then Derek Wampole helped his own cause with an rbi single. Dansville scored another run in the home 4th when Tom Linzy was hit by a pitch. Anthony Kanaval singled. & a wild pitch put runners at the corners. Kanaval attempted to “make something happen” by strolling off the bag at first & drew a throw over there. While the Trojans attempted to pick hit off Tom Linzy raced home with the 2nd run of the ballgame. Dansville’s defense would help Wampole out twice in the early innings. In the first with 2 gone consecutive hits resulted in an outfield assist as Mustang left fielder Ryan Conklin gunned out an Alexander runner at the plate to short circuit a first inning opportunity. In the top of the 5th the greeen & gold had runners at the corners with 1 out when the Mustang infield turned a 4-6-3 double-play to end the threat.
The Mustangs drew on that defensive momentum in the bottom of the 5th when they added to their lead. Ryan Conklin led off with a walk, went to second on a passed ball, & then scored on an Alex West single. Westie stole second & later scored on an rbi single by Derek Wampole making it a 4-0 ballgame. The Mustangs got in some trouble in the top of the 6th with a couple of walks & a wild pitch. Nick Donnelly’s single made it 4-1 as the Trojans wound up leaving the bases loaded. In the top of the 7th though, the “wheels came off” for the Mustangs. With one out, Alexander ripped 3 straight, hard-hit singles to load the bases. Was it time to go to the bullpen? Maybe. A bases-loaded walk to Nick Donnelly made it 4-2 & pushed the tying runs into scoring position. After striking out the next hitter, a slow roller toward the bag at 2nd with the bases loaded resulted in disaster. The fielder was attempting to both “field the ball” & “step on second” for the force out. But neither were accomplished as all hands were safe on the error & it was now a 4-3 game. P.J. Brennan then hit a smash down the left field line that escaped the Dansville outfield allowing all 3 runners to come homeon a single & an error giving Alexander the lead! Matt Grover’s pinch-hit single made it a 7-4 game as the visitors scored 5 unearned runs to take command in the 7th.
Dansville had one last chance. In the 7th they took their best shot, but came up just shy. With one out Alex West got things going with a single. Derek Wampole followed with a double putting runners at 2nd & 3rd. When Holden Schramm’s grounder was bobbled, a run would score on the error putting the tying runs on base for the Mustangs. Forrest Edmond lifted a sacrifice fly to left that brought home another run. A throwing error moved the potential tying run into scoring position at second. But the final out came on a come-backer to the pitcher & Alexander escaped with a come-from-behind 7-6 win.
Hunter Marzolf recorded the win in relief working 3 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits, he fanned 4 & walked 2 after coming on in relief of starter Nate Henry who pitched well over the first 4 frames. The Trojans (3-3) offense was led by Derrick Bush’s 3-4 with a double. Nick Donnelly was 2-3 knocked in a run & scored a run. Dansville’s Derek Wampole deserved a better fate as he took the loss going 6 2/3’s giving up 7 runs (only 2 earned) on 10 hits, he fanned 5 & walked 4. Ryan Conklin came in to record the final out of the inning. Wampole led the Dansville attack by going 4-4 with a double, driving in 2 runs & scoring one. He also stole a base. Alex West 2-4 with an rbi & scored 2 runs, and had one stolen base. Ryan Conklin was 1-1 & scored 2 runs…Anthony Kanaval was 1-1 & had a stolen base….Tom Linzy scored a run, while Holden Schramm & Forrest Edmond each drove in a run in the heartbreaker.
Dansville slips to 3-4 as they visit York on Wednesday (Apr. 20) afternoon.
