Lions Roar Past Dansville

Wellsville 13 Dansville 5

The Wellsville Lions came into Dansville on Monday (Apr. 18) afternoon scored early & late, handing the Mustangs a 13-5 setback at Babcock Park in high school baseball action. The Allegany County club came out swinging in the first inning & plated 3 quick runs against Dansville starter Anthony Kanaval. Coach Tom Hober’s team showed some “heart” as they bounced right back in the bottom half to tie things up. The locals were “opportunistic” as Anthony Sackett was hit by a pitch, Derek Wampole reached on an error & then A.J. Kanaval’s infield grounder drove one run home. A wild pitch & a passed ball would plate the tying runs. Wellsville pulled ahead for good when they scored twice in the 2nd & then scored 4 more times to break the game open in the 3rd. The Mustangs mustered a couple runs in the home half of the 4th when Tom Linzy singled, & stole second. Forrest Edmond reached on an error putting runners at first & second. Coach Tom Hober put the double-steal on & pushed both runners into scoring position. A wild pitch brought one across the plate & then Holden Schramm bounced into a fielders choice that knocked in Dansville’s final run. Coach Hober added, “we had some chances in those last couple of innings & had runners in scoring position, but just couldn’t come up with that clutch hit.”

The Mustangs (3-3) sent a trio of hurlers to the hill in the game as Anthony Kanaval lasted 2 1/3 innings & took the loss. Holden Schramm pitched very effectively in middle relief as he worked 3 2/3’s, & Alex West recorded the final 3 outs. Hober noted, ” Schramm came in & did a real nice job for us in relief today. I may have left him in too long as he started getting in trouble in that last inning. But he kept us in it, & gave us a chance to get back in it. ” Dansville only had 2 hits in the game as Holden Schramm had a double & Tom Linzy had a single…which was the extent of the offense. Dansville hosts Alexander on Tuesday (Apr. 19) at Babcock Park with first pitch at 4:30pm.
