After the initial “wash out” of the first proposed date for the annual Dansville Softball Tournament back in early April, sunshine drenched Babcock Park for the high school affair to unfold on Saturday (Apr. 16) morning as the host team invited Greece Odyssey, Campbell-Savona, & Canisteo-Greenwood to the diamond for a 2-game tourney. As the action unfolded…it would find the host team “splitting” on the day as Coach Nick Crawford’s crew would drop a heart-breaker in the opener & then bounce back to win the nightcap & finish 3rd on the day.
Dansville would draw Canisteo-Greenwood in the first game as the red & black would show some “heart” early in the game. The visiting Redskins would plate the first 3 runs of the game in the top of the first inning to take a quick lead as Redskins’ starting pitcher Seresa Miller knocked in a run in her own behalf to get the rally started. The Lady Mustangs bounced right back in the bottom half scoring 3 of their own as Cheyenne Markowski’s rbi triple brought one run home. Maddie Farrell’s single drove in another, & she would later score on a passed ball knotting things up. In the home 2nd coach Nick Crawford’s crew would take their only lead of the game when Cheyenne Markowski & Adrianna Little each singled in runs giving the home team a 5-3 advantage. C-G would scratch away single runs in the top of the 3rd & 6th. In the 7th the Steuben County club made their move when Clara King’s single brought home what proved to the winning run. Emma Jiusto would also single home an insurance run as the Redskins would prevail in a 7-5 final & gain entry to the championship round against Campbell-Savona.
For Dansville….Natasha King threw 7 innings allowing 10 runs, 14 hits & struck out six. …offensively – Hannah Rex 2-3 & scored a p air of runs…Cheyenee Markowski 1-4 with a triple & a couple rbi’s….Sarah Cotton was 1-4 & Maddie Farrell had an rbi-single in 4 trips.
Canisteo-Greenwood was led by Serea Miller who notched the win working 7 innings of 6 hit softball & striking out 8. For the Redskins Elayna Din was 4-5 & scored once….Clara King 2-4 with the game-winning rbi in the top of the 7th….Emma Jiusto 2-4 & Olivia Berardi was 2-4 & scored once in the victory.
In the consolation contest Dansville battled Greece Odyssey in a game of “deuces” that the Lady Mustangs would win by an 8-6 final. All the runs in the game were scored in pairs. Each team plated a pair of runs in their first 2 at bats. Dansville broke the 4-4 tie with a couple in the top of the 4th before the city team scored twice in the home 5th to tie it. The horses hustled 2 more home in the 6th to hang on for the win. Brooke Hartson would get the win working 4 innings allowing 4 runs on just 3 hits. Natasha King came on to record the save throwing the final 3 innings giving up 2 runs on just 2 hits. At the plate Cheyenne Markowski was 2-3 with a double, driving in 2 runs & scoring one…Maddie Farrell was 2-4 & scored a run…Sarah Cotton had a hit & scored 3 times….while Emma Kelly added a double & scored a run. For Odyssey Sara Nadule took a tough loss on the slab as she gave up 8 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7. Greece was led at the dish by Lisa Anovrah who had a double in 3 trips & scored a run…Lisa Vdura was 1-3 with a run scored, & Jessica Cira had a hit & scored a run as well.
Campbell-Savona would wind up winning the tournament for the 2nd year in a row as coach Chris Austin’s Panthers won the opener 11-4 over Greece Odyssey, & the claimed a 9-5 win over Canisteo Greenwood in the championship game!
