Geneseo 10 Dansville 3
The Dansville Mustangs were hoping to start a 5-game week on a “positive note” as the red hot Geneseo Blue Devils were in town for a battle at Babcock Park n Monday (Apr. 25) afternoon. Although it started well for coach Tom Hober’s team, the Blue Devils bats would pound out 16 hits against a pair of Mustang arms for a 10-3 victory, Geneseo’s 11th straight win!
The game had an apparently “dismal” start for Dansville as a pair of errors gave Geneseo 5 outs in the first frame, but Mustang hurler Holden Schramm did the Harry Houdini act & escaped unscathed! In a bizarre top of the first Blue Devils lead off man Trevor Frazier singled. Moments later Dansville had him picked off of first. In the ensuing rundown, the Mustangs would throw the ball away allowing the runner to get back to first safely. Two pitches later the runner attempts to steal & Dansville backstop Justin Vogt guns to Tom Linzy who slaps the tag on the runner for the out. After Mitchell Walton restarted the potential rally with a single, Brian Linton laid down a bunt that was fielded by the Mustang infield but thrown away up the right field line allowing both runners to move to 2nd & 3rd with one out. Scramm would “K” the clean-up hitter on a breaking ball. Then the # 5 hitter in the line-up steps in. The 1-0 pitch sails over the batter’s head & as he ducks to get out of the way, the ball squarely strikes the bat & bounces out in front of the plate on a couple hops to pitcher, Holden Schramm who tosses to first for the 3rd out, getting out of trouble without the Blue Devils scoring! It had to be one of the strangest half-innings of scoreless baseball I’ve ever seen !
Dansville turned around & used the momentum to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With one out Ryan Conklin was hit by an 0-2 pitch. Anthony Kanaval’s single put runners at 1st & 2nd. Alex West followed with an rbi single leaving runners at the corners. The Mustangs they put the double-steal on & it works to perfection as Dansville takes a 2-0 lead. That margin didn’t last long as Geneseo rallied to score 3 times to take the lead for good in the 2nd. With one down Matt Robinson drew a walk, Brendon Wheeler followed with bunt single. Jason Valentine’s hit loaded the bases. Trevor Frazier & Mitch Walton each singled home runs. & then the Blue Devils pulled off the double-steal successfully to take the lead 3-2. Coach Nick Drolette’s team tacked on 4 more in the 4th. With one out Trevor Fraizier singled, Mitch Walton doubled, & then Brian Linton’s double drove 2 runs in. Another scored on a Sean Kelly double, & then J.J. Dahlheim lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2. The Mustangs scratched away one in the 5th when Tom Linzy singled, went to 2nd on a walk to Ryan Conklin. On an errant pick-off throw to second, Linzy would race home with the run. Meanwhile Dansville would load the bases & proceed to strand all 3 baserunners. The blue & white added to their lead with a single run in the 6th with a walk,a wild pitch & a Parker Burnette rbi single. The Devils finished the job in the top of the 7th when Sean LaGrou walked, Sean Kelly tripled, & then J.J. Dahlheim singled making the final 10-3.
Jake Young would get the win for Geneseo (11-1) working 4 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs , 2 earned, on 6 hits, with 3 strikeouts, 3 walks & 2 hit batters. Parker Burnette came on to close things out with 2 2/3’s innings of scoreless relief giving up 1 hit, while striking out 2 & walking 1.
