Geneseo 13 Wayland-Cohocton 3
On Friday (Apr. 15) afternoon at “the Nest” both teams were working on winning streaks….so to speak. Wayland-Cohocton was coming off their first win of the year over Wellsville, while Geneseo had lost to the same Lions team to start the season. Since then however, the Blue Devils have been rolling by winning their last 5 in a row…in search of a half-dozen. Coach Nick Drollette’s club had shut-out 3 previous opponents earlier in the week ( Letchworth, York & Cal-Mum). Geneseo is another team who is “pitching rich” when it comes to good quality “arms”. In this one, Matt Robinson was making his first start & had a “shaky” second inning & that was it as he went 6 innings for the win as Geneseo provided him with plenty of offense…13 runs & 13 hits !
On a beautiful day at the ballpark Geneseo grabbed the lead in the first on a 2-out clutch double by Jake Young who plated the Blue Devils first run in the opening inning. Mitchell Walton had singled & Brian Linton walked to start the inning…as the Blue Devils pulled out in front 1-0. Wayland-Cohocton showed some of that same “spunk” they showed against Wellsville & came right back & took a momentary lead in the home half of the 2nd. Pat O’Neal led off with a walk & Hunter Bressler followed with a singled to center. When Mike Feinman attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, the pitcher fielded the ball, but nobody covered first so Feinman wound up with a bunt single & the bases were loaded with nobody out! Jack Gibson gave Way-Coh the lead when he singled right up the middle as the ball bounced directly over second base & into centerfield scoring 2 runs. With a runner at 3rd, the Golden Eagles went with the “squeeze play” as Curren Finn’s bunt got the job done & the Golden Eagles flew into the lead 3-1.
Geneseo has been down this road before & they would work patiently and regained the lead with a 4-spot in the top of the 3rd & never looked back. The Blue Devils would “bat around” in scoring the go-ahead runs. Walks to Mitchell Walton & Brian Litton got things started. Then it was “deja vu…all over again”. This time Geneseo’s clean-up hitter Sean Kelly laid down a bunt, & nobody covered for the Eagles loading the bases with blue & white. Jake Young’s sacrifice fly plated one run, while Matt Robinson helped himself with a 2-run single putting the Blue Devils in the lead. Another run would score when a baserunner was hung-up between first & 2nd as Geneseo led 5-3. The Devils weren’t done as they scored 3 more in the 4th. Again it was Mitch Walton who opened with a single, Brian Linton’s sacrifice moved him into scoring position. An infield grounder advanced the runner to 3rd. But then 2 straight errors opened the door as one run scored & then J.J. Dahlheim singled home 2 more making it 8-3. Geneseo would score 5 unearned runs in the top of the 7th as a pair of errors got things going, & then Jake Young, & Matt Robinson each stroked run-scoring hits making the final 13-3 as the Blue Devils pounded a handful of Wayland-Cohocton pitchers for 13 hits. Eight of the runs were unearned on the day. Eythan Briggs started & took the loss as Jack Gibson, Hunter Bressler, Connor Englert & Mike Feinman all paraded to the hill. Only Bressler & Feinman would throw scoreless stints in the game.
Geneseo (6-1) saw Matt Robinson record the pitching victory working 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits with 6 K’s & 3 walks. Parker Burnette threw the final frame allowing a hit & had one strikeout. Offensively for Geneseo Mitchell Walton was 2-4 with 3 runs scored…Brian Linton scored 3 runs, had a sacrifice & a stolen base…Sean Kelly 1-4 with 2 runs scored…Jake Young 2-4 with a double & 3 rbis, a sacrifice & scored twice…Matt Robinson 2-5 with 3 rbi’ss & scored 2 runs…Brendon Wheeler 1-3 & scored a run…J.J. Dahlheim 2-4 with 2 rbi’ss….David Kaye 3-5 & scored a run. Geneseo hosts Holley on Saturday (Apr. 16) at noon & then battles Warsaw on Monday (Apr. 18).
Wayland-Cohocton ( 1-5 ) saw Jack Gibson go 1-1 with 2 rbi’s & a stolen base….Curren Finn 1-2 with a sacrifice & an rbi….Mike Feinman & Hunter Bressler each went 1-3 & scored a run…..Andrue Holbrook & Eythan Briggs were each 1-3…& Pat O’Neil also scored a run for Way-Coh. The Golden Eagles play 4 straight games Tue, Wed. Thur, & Friday (Apr. 19, 20, 21, & 22).
