Scrappy Eagles Set to Make Some Diamond Dust

Wayland-Cohocton varsity baseball coach Steve Wager came off of a season last year somehow managed to win 9 games with a very youthful, & quite inexperienced team that was switching & shifting all year long. Call them the high school version of the “hit-less wonders” but the Golden Eagles won those games despite committing an average of 3 errors a game, a team ERA of 4.50, & having a team batting average of .204 ! Talk about great coaching???!! Hats off to Steve Wager, Skip Small, Barry Shaver, Terry Brown, & Jake Kenney. That’s what you call “piecing a season together!”
All things considered, its an “Eagle scrapiness” that drove this team, with some great grit & determination. This year Wayland-Cohocton returns 7 juniors in the mix who were on that “make-shift” squad from a year ago. Now with another year under their belts, the key will be coming up with arms to counteract the 98 innings tossed by 2015’s graduated seniors. Yet another challenge for the maroon & gold ! Some of Coach Wager’s hurlers at this point include Eythan Briggs, Hunter Bressler, Jack Gibson, & freshman John Freberg. Jason Page will be a key on the “utility” side of things, a guy who’s played 6 different positions. Mike Schumacher, one of the teams big bats from a year ago will look to “up” those numbers this season.
Coach Wager noted, “Offensively we will try to put together quality at-bats to help manufacture runs and improve on last year’s offensive numbers. If all goes well, we hope to be a very competitive team in a tough Livingston County Division”. The current varsity” spring training” roster includes seniors Nick Shoram, Mike Feinman, Wayne Parsons, juniors Eythan Briggs, Jason Page, Curren Finn, Jack Gibson, Pat O’Neal, Mike Schumacher, Hunter Bressler, Connor Blake, sophomores Andrue Holbrook, Mitchell Wetherbee and freshman John Freberg. Wayland-Cohocton opens its season on Wed. Mar. 30th at home vs. Cal-Mum in a 4:30pm start.
