It was “rival” weekend at “the Nest” where Wayland-Cohocton hosted Dansville in both junior varsity & varsity hoop action on Thursday & Friday (Jan 21 & 22) nights. In Thursday’s junior varsity tests, the Golden Eagles would capture both contests in very “close context”.
The J.V. boys would defeat visiting Dansville 49-46 in a tight, & typical “rival” battle. Way-Coh took an early 14-9 lead in the game & managed to fend off a number of challenges from Dansville in earning the eventual 3-point victory. Coach Brent Owens club was led by James Carman’s 18 points ( 4- 3’s) …Brandon DeGruarde 9…Jeff Fox 8…Kevin Ebert 10…..& Ryan Ebert 4. Dansville was led by Hunter Little’s 20 markers…Nick Rosica added 10….Dylan Race 9….Jake Wadsworth 5 & Talon Sherry finished with 2 points.
The girls game tipped Way-Coh’s way as well, with the Golden Eagles building a 10 point lead late in the game, only to see Dansville slice it to a 35-31 final as the J.V. Eagles handed the Mustangs their 3rd loss of the season to avenge an earlier season setback at “the Corral. ” Dansville held the early lead 12-5 after the first 8 minutes, but then the momentum reversed as Wayland-Cohocton hustled back to take a 19-17 lead at the half in a 12-5 run in the 2nd quarter. Things were pretty even in the 3rd, but Way-Coh put on an early spurt to start the 4th & built a double-digit lead at one point. The Eagles had a chance to close things out, but couldn’t get the free throws to drop as Dansville slipped back into the game, but would fall short in the 35-31 final.
Wayland-Cohocton was led by Delaney Brehm & Mackenzie Johnson’s 12 points apiece….Kierra McClure added 9….& Evyn Meldrum scored 2. Dansville (12-3) was led by Grace Rittenhouse’s 17 points…Jackie Bleckinger & Skylar Race each had 5….while Gabby Anderson & Madison Akers scored 2 apiece in the setback.
