Pavilion 48 Dansville 46 (O.T.).

Pavilion & Dansville certainly “saved the best for last” on Wednesday (Jan.6) night at “the Corral” where the 2 teams clashed in girls basketball & wound up playing “overtime” in order for the Golden Gophers to earn their 2nd win of the season as the purple & gold slipped past the Lady Mustangs 48-46 in O.T. Dansville had built a couple of decent leads throughout the game, but a pesky Pavilion team came coming back & never quit on the night….& they would eventually knot things up &with their grit and determination sent the game into an extra session.

From the outset of the game you would have thought that maybe Dansville had control of things, but that was not the case. The Mustangs scored the first 8 points of the game to pull ahead. However, coach Vern Brooks’ club would score 6 of the last 10 points in the period making it 12-6 contest after one. Jennifer Yuhnke’s 2 free throws to start the 2nd put Pavilion in striking distance with a 4 point deficit. Buckets by Abby Kuhn & Bailey Harnish pushed the margin back to 8 points. As the half closed, Pavilion started a little charge that finished with a Kim Davis deuce with :04 left making it 20-17 at the half as the Mustangs held a slim lead.
Early in the 3rd the Golden Gophers dug in & sliced the lead to 24-22 with 5 minutes to play in the quarter. Bri Henchen got hot outside for the Mustangs as she bagged a couple of “huge” 3’s….while Abby Kuhn heated up underneath jacking the lead back up to 10 as Dansville went on a roll of their own to close out the quarter with a 34-27 lead. As the 4th period opened, Pavilion closed the gap immediately as Jennifer Yuhnke hit a 3, & then Sam Majchrzak hit a deuce & it was very quickly a 2-point game. Kim Davis’ basket about a minute into the quarter tied the game at 34-34. The excitement had just started !
Bri Henchen & Sabrina Didas each hit free throws to put Dansville up by 2. Then Angela Graham nailed a 3-pointer puttng Pavilion in the lead for the first time at 37-36! Jordan Barrett’s basket put the Gophers up by 3. Then, Sarah Cotton connected from downtown for Dansville making it a 39-39 tie ! Sam Majchrzak’s free throw gave the purple & gold a 1 point edge. Then Bri Henchen hit a jumper with :32 seconds left putting the Mustangs in front by a point. Four seconds later Sam Marjchrzak’s 2 charity tosses put Pavilion in front by one again 42-41. With :16 seconds left Bailey Harnish muscled a shot off the window for a deuce tipping the lead back the red & black’s way 43-42. Pavilion’s Jennifer Yuhnke’s free throw with 3.1 left tied the game at 43-43 to send it into overtime.
In the extra session Bri Henchen bagged a free throw putting Dansville up by 1 with 2 1/.2 minutes left. Moments later Kim Davis’ basket inside gave the Gophers the lead back (45-44). With just under a minute left Bailey Harnish scored on the blocks making it Dansville’s lead at 46-45. In the blink of an eye Angela Graham hit an inside field goal with :45 remaining putting Pavilion in the lead (47-46). Jennifer Yuhnke’s free throw with :18 seconds left provided the final margin of 48-46 as the Mustangs effort to tie it fell short as the Gophers celebrated with a road win to start 2016 at the expense of Dansville in a heart-breaker.
