Dansville 70 Letchworth 64 ( O.T. )
It was another “barn burner” at “the Corral” on Wednesday (Jan. 27) night as Letchworth & Dansville battled back & forth throughout the contest before the the 2 teams went into an extra session before the Mustangs would emerge with a 70-64 win in front of the hometown crowd in Wednesday night (Jan. 27) boys basketball excitement. The game saw each team take turns at holding the lead as the momentum swung back & forth all night keeping a fine crowd on the edge of their seats. It didn’t take long for each team to set their best foot forward as Dansville’s Derek Wampole hit an “old fashioned” 2-plus-1 in the first : 15 seconds of the game. Twenty seconds later Letchworth’s Brad Bliss bombed in a “3” to tie it & that would be a quick preview of what the night would be all about. The Indians went on the warpath scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take a 10-5 lead mid-way through the opening quarter. The Mustangs chipped away & later would take the lead on a pair of Anthony Sackett 3-pointers! With both teams’ offenses “clicking” coach Jeff Hopkins’ club would hold a slim 19-18 lead at the end of the first quarter as the smoke cleared from both teams’ hot-shooting. Coach Dave Moodie’s club saw Derek Wampole score 10 & Anthony Sackett 6 in the opening 8 minutes, while Letchworth saw 6 different players score, 3 of them hitting “treys” along the way. Defense became a little more evident & “foul trouble” also contributed to the scoring being chopped in half in the 2nd stanza. The Indians went outside with a couple more 3’s, while Dansville was down low on the blocks doing their scoring as an “alley oop” to Derek Wampole sent the teams to the locker room with Letchworth holding onto a 29-26 advantage.
The roles reversed in the 3rd where the Mustangs started “bombing away” as Anthony Sackett hit a pair of 3-pointers & Derek Wampold knocked one down as well. Again, the visiting red & white would settle on the balanced scoring approach. Dansville outscored Letchworth 17-13 in the quarter to take a very slim 43-42 lead into the 4th. The Mustangs would extend the lead to 5 over the first couple minutes of the period. In that time Dansville’s Derek Wampole would pick up his 4th foul forcing him to sit. The home team struggled on offense as Letchworth would whittle the lead away. With the red & black holding a 51-49 lead with 2:22 left Dansville was looking for someone else to “step-up” & at that moment Thomas Graves loaded the gun & drilled a “huge” 3-pointer pushing the lead back to 54-49. With :43 seconds left Anthony Sackett hit a field goal that established the largest lead for either team in the game as Dansville led by 7. The lead would not be a safe one however. Donnie Shearing connected from “downtown” & then Brad Bliss went to the line twice & hit 4 straight free throws to tie the game with :21 seconds left. Dansville called a time-out & then worked the ball around on their final possession to try & get off a game-winning shot. The Indians defense forced the Mustangs to take just a little bit too long to launch the final shot. Anthony Sackett was falling towards the right corner when he launched up a 3-pointer as time expired that went in…but it was ruled that he had released it “too late” & the game went to overtime tied at 56-56 ! One of the keys to the comeback was Letchworth going 7 for 7 from the line in the 4th….while Dansville was 2-4 in that stretch, both misses (which were the only misfires of the night for Dansville from the line) would be the front ends of 1 & 1 situations.
The overtime session started much like the game did as Dansville’s Derek Wampole hit a deuce to put the Mustangs in front, & then Brad Bliss bagged a pair of charity tosses to tie it up again at 58. The horses would score the next 5 points as Derek Wampole went to work inside again, while Anthony Sackett took care of the outside game by draining his 5th 3-pointer of the night making it 63-58. Derek Wampole & Thomas Graves would each hit a pair of free throws to make the lead 69-61 before Brad Bliss hit yet another 3-pointer with :07 left & it wouldn’t be enough as Dansville would prevail in a 70-64 thriller !
The Mustangs ( 7-9) saw Derek Wampole pour in 36 points to go with a dozen rebounds ( he was 10 of 12 from the stripe)….Anthony Sackett had 17 points including 5 three-pointers & 5 steals…Thomas Graves had 5 ” huge” points….Austin Milliman & Hunter Little had 4 apiece…Nick Rosica & Dan Jesmer each had 2 points & 5 rebounds in the victory.
