“Middle-Period Fall-Out” Dooms Dansville Hoopsters

Caledonia Mumford 62 Dansville 56

Many coaches will express the desire for their teams to “start quickly” & “finish strong”. That’s exactly what the Dansville boys basketball team did on Tuesday (Dec. 8) night at the “Red Raider Rotunda” in Caledonia. The Mustangs opened the game on a 23-11 run & finished it on a 19-9 tear. However, the red & black did very little in between as Cal-Mum claimed a 62-56 win at home in Livingston County cross-over hoop action. Dansville skipper Dave Moodie noted, “I agree. Its nice to start the way we did & finish the way we did. The biggest thing I stressed after our first loss of the season on Tuesday was the fact that we had to play for FOUR quarters!” Moodie observed, ” we played extremely well to start the game. We handled their press, got some easy baskets, moved the ball well, we had it all working for us. In the 2nd quarter we saw them come back & they finished the half with a quick put-back that made it a 1-point game. We turned the ball over in the 3rd & just stopped doing the good things we were doing back in the first quarter. It was simply a lack of execution on our part.” Dansville put it back together…in a “too much, too little, too late scenario” in the 4th quarter. Cal-Mum had gone on a 42-14 run in the middle 2 periods to take command of the game.

The strange thing about the game was the way the roles reversed as the action continued. Dansville had the upper hand early & Cal-Mum had to play “catch-up”. Then the pendulum of momentum swung the Red Radiers’ way & then all of a sudden, it was the Mustangs who were racing to try & keep up. Dansville got it back together in the final stanza, but by that time they had dug too large a hole to climb out of. Coach Moodie said…”Cal-Mum lost a lot of players from their outstanding team last year. But coach Dan Dickens runs a tough program & they’re a typical Cal-Mum team….they’re going to keep coming after you….& they did!”

Dansville (2-1) suffered their first loss of the year as the numbers reflected Derek Wampole scored 18 points, with 7 rebounds, 4 assists while going 6-6 from the foul line…Ryan Conklin contributed 13 markers with 4 three’s & 9 boards….Thomas Graves hit a “trio of treys” for 9 points & had 5 rebounds…Anthony Sackett had 7 points & 5 assists…Tom Wise 4 points, Forrest Edmond 3 points, & Austin Milliman 2 points & 4 rebounds. Dansville hosts rival Wayland-Cohocton on Thursday (Dec. 10) night in the start of the annual Dansville Rotary Club Tip-Off Tournament.

Cal-Mum (2-1) was led by Shai Nelson’s 22 markers, Ian Lenhardt scored 11 & Rich Estes 10 for the maroon & gray.
