Dansville 59 Canisteo-Greenwood 51
Not only did “the season” start on an “up note” for the Dansville boys basketball team, the “home season” started in somewhat the same fashion….with a win !
Coach Dave Moodie’s troops have tucked away a pair of wins to start the 2015-16 campaign, as each was quite different in arriving at the final outcome. Earlier in the week the Mustangs never took the lead against Letchworth until the last :45 seconds & had to hang on for the win. In Saturday’s (Dec. 5) non-league test with Canisteo-Greenwood, Dansville had “fluctuating” lead for a vast majority of the ballgame. Dansville had built a number of double-digit leads throughout the game, but the visiting Redskins showed their resiliency as they continued to battle back time & time again in the game. The Mustangs would divert a number of Canisteo-Greenwood charges, & would answer them all by pumping the lead back up to 10 or more as they came away with a 59-51 win. Coach Moodie noted, ” tonight it was nice to establish the lead & then protect it, instead of having to battle back like we did against Letchworth the other night. There are obviously some things we still need to work on, but I’m pleased when we improve each game, & I feel we did that against Canisteo-Greenwood.”
Dansville came out in the Saturday night affair & swapped the first couple of buckets with the Redskins & then pushed out to an 18-7 lead at the end of the first period. The red & black couldn’t get too complacent with that margin as Canisteo-Greenwood scored a pair of “3’s” & a deuce in their first 3 trips down the floor to start the second & the lead quickly turned into a challenging 18-15 contest!! Following a Mustang time-out, the horses “righted the ship” as Derek Wampole stepped outside & drilled a “3′ while Austin Milliman got a couple of buckets on the blocks to help pump the lead back up to double-digits. It would remain that way until Canisteo-Greenwood’s Justin Hendrickson knocked-down a “3-pointer” at the buzzer making it a 31-22 Mustang lead at the half.
In the 2nd half coach Moodie’s crew attempted to reverse the Redskins’ momentum. Tom Wise started the 3rd, the same way he started the ballgame, with a quick field goal. The Mustangs built the lead back up to 44-32 with 1:22 left in the period. Canisteo-Greenwood would quickly score the next 8 points, including a Bobby Avery 3-pointer to start the 4th making it now a 44-40 lead ! The Redskins were on the warpath once again! Austin Milliman would then answer with a deuce underneath, & then Thomas Graves’ steal resulted in a lay-up on the other end which put Dansville back on track as they would go on to establish some “breathing room” the rest of the way as the Mustangs would wind up with a 59-51 win at home.
Dansville (2-0) was led by Derek Wampole’s 27 points, 15 boards, & 4 assists….Austin Milliman scored 11 & grabbed 6 rebounds…Ryan Conklin contributed 9 points, 11 boards, & 4 assists…Tom Wise added 6 points…Thomas Graves had 5 points, 5 rebounds & 5 steals…& Anthony Sackett finished with 1 point. Dansville visits Caledonia-Mumford on Tuesday night (Dec. 8). Canisteo Greenwood (1-2) saw Justin Hendrickson pump in 22 points, including 4 tri-fectas…Bobby Avery scored 15, Holden Weeks 7, Dylan Wentworth 5, & Del Crooks netted 2.
