Cluctch “3’s & “Frees” Push Perry Past Dansville For Tournament Title

Perry 56 Dansville 47

In 2014 Dansville slipped past Perry to claim the tournament title game 51-49. The Yellowjackets have a long memory & remembered. This year coach Phil Wyant’s team turned things around on Saturday night ( Dec. 12) as the blue & gold drained some key “3 ‘s” & clutch free throws down the stretch to claim a 56-47 victory over host Dansville to win the Rotary Tournament title. Perry would grab the early lead in the opening minutes of the game as Tyler Cowie hit a shot that made it 9-4 about 4 minutes into the game. Dansville came back on a deuce & a “trey” by Derek Wampole which tied the contest at 9-9. In the waning moments of the quarter the Mustangs came from behind again when Ryan Conklin bottomed out a shot from downtown to give the red & black a 16-14 lead at the end of the quarter. Perry continued to push & would outscore Dansville 9-5 in the 2nd period and gain a 23-21 lead at the half. In the third each team received some clutch performances as Austin Milliman scored 7 points in the period for coach Dave Moodie’s Mustangs. Tyler Cowie would “counter” that for Perry as he connected on 4 3-pointers lifting the Yellowjackets to a lead of as many as 8 in the quarter. As the period closed Dansville’s Derek Wampole & Austin Milliman would hit buckets that would make things close again with the bees holding a 38-35 lead heading into the 4th. As time wound down Dansville would creep to within 3 points several times before Perry’s timely free-throw shooting down the stretch would spell victory. The Yellowjackets would hit 9 of 12 from the line in the closing minutes of play to lift coach Phil Wyant’s team a 56-47 victory avenging last year’s 2-point setback.

Sophomore stand-out Austin Croll scored 17 in the victory for Perry (3-2) as he went 6 of 8 from the stripe in the 4th. Tyler Cowie netted 14 points including a quartet of 3’s in the second half. Owen Spencer finished with 11 points as Zach Lowery added 10 and Daniel Elliott added 4 for the winners. Dansville ( 2-2) saw Derek Wampole score 22 points while grabbing 11 boards…..Austin Milliman muscled his way to 11 points & grabbed 17 rebounds…Ryan Conklin drianed a trio of 3-pointers finishing with 9 with 5 boards…Thomas Graves had 3 points, while Anthony Sackett scored 2 points & dished out 5 assists in the disheartening setback.

The Rotary Club All-Tournament team included Caleb Warn from Campbell-Savona, Wayland-Cohocton’s Connor Englert, Tyler Cowie from Perry, Dansville’s Austin Milliman & Derek Wampole….as Perry’s Austin Croll was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 tournament.
