# 2 Mynderse 2 # 1 Wayland-Cohocton 0
It was “so close, but so far” for the Wayland-Cohocton girls soccer team on Friday (Oct. 30) night as the went up against Mynderse Academy in the Class B-2 Section V Championship at James Dollard Stadium at Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School. In the title tilt, you could almost feel the Golden Eagles getting “snake bitten”. One of the questions…”was it meant to be…or not?” After playing tough throughout the season, Way-Coh would give up a goal in the first minute & a half of the game that put them “behind the 8-ball” early in the game. The Golden Eagles were not used to playing from behind, but willingly accepted that card they were dealt. The visitors would fend off some strong challenges, & scored once more in the final minutes for a 2-0 win.
In a game with the caliber of competition at this level, you figure it’ll be a defensive battle of some sort. However, I don’t believe anyone would have thought a goal would be scored within the first minute & a half !! That’s what befell the Golden Eagles as 1:14 into the game (38:46 left) as a ball spun onto the carpet (unattended) just outside the goal-mouth about 5 yards away. Blue Devils attacker Gillian Lamb knew what to do with it. She stuck it in the net…giving the Blue Devils a very quick 1-0 lead on the chilly carpet at the “Cougar Cage”. Wayland-Cohocton would work hard to get some chances in the remainder of the first half. Those chances came, but the Golden Eagles couldn’t finish them as Mynderse would hold on for a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Coach Terry Brown’s Eagles would be flapping their wings in the 2nd half, & put some mad rushes on the Blue Devils box in the final 40 minutes. Let alone 14 second-half shots, the maroon & gold had a penalty kick with 22: 52 left that was stopped by Mynderse keeper Maegann Mein. Moments later the Eagles would “box one around” the goal. The shot would hit the underside of the crossbar, & then struck the inner edge of the upright, but never went over the line. Way-Coh would plunk the post again as well. As time was running down & Wayland Cohocton was attempting to push the ball up field when the Devils deflected one into the right side of the box where Gillian Lamb made another mad-rush & finished it with just 2:11 left to finish Wayland-Coohocton’s hopes of a Sectional title as the navy & white claimed a 2-0 win along with the Sectional Crown.
Wayland-Cohocton ( 16-3) out shot Mynderse 22-15. The Golden Eagles had 7 corner kicks to 5 for the Fingerlakes team. In goal Ashlee Schumacher had a dozen stops for the Golden Eagles, while Maegann Mein stopped 16 shots for Mynderse, who will now go on to the class “B” State Qualifier on Tuesday (Nov. 3) against either Livonia or Hornell at a site & time to be determined.
