Dansville 40 Wellsville 16

Its been a long “dry spell” for the Dansville football team whose first win came in their opener over rival Wayland-Cohocton. Since then its been a long road….a long, long road! Part of that journey was a painful mid-season setback at home against the Wellsville Lions. That night Dansville had a 13-0 lead & saw it slip away as the Lions roared back in the 3rd quarter to overtake their hosts in what would finish as a 14-13 win for the Lions. With a very tough Livingston County Division One schedule, its a chore to post a good record. Neither tame made the Sectional cut, but in the Connors & Ferris Bowl bracket these 2 teams saw each other again…this time at the “Lions Lair” where the Mustangs would avenge that earlier loss in much the same fashion that Wellsville won the first time around. In this “week-8” match-up coach Terry Conway’s club spotted the Lions the first 16 points of the contest, before the Mustangs stormed from behind to score 40 unanswered points in rolling to a 40-16 victory on Thursday (Oct. 22) night in Wellsville.

The orange & black posted TD’s & PAT’s in each of the first 2 quarters to take the lead. The game started on a real down-note for Dansville as a sack & a fumble recovery in the end zone by Wellsville’s Austin Crawford set the tone. Carter Hoffman raced in for the deuce making it 8-0 in the blink of an eye. In the 2nd Hoffman would break free with a 22 yard TD run, & then he also ran in the conversion & Dansville was experiencing some “deja vu” from earlier in the season. Finally the Mustangs said firmly “ENOUGH!” Late in the 2nd quarter Dansville started to play with a renewed “conviction & intensity”! Prior to the half the Mustangs got on the board with a Matt Martusciello 6 yard touchdown run which capped a 76 yard drive making it 16-6 at the half.

The 2nd half was all Mustangs ! In the 3rd Dansville put together a 66 yard drive to put up a 44 yard TD pass from Tom Linzy to Alex West. West ran in the 2-point conversion making it 16-14. The red & black took the lead for good in the waning moments of the 3rd when Matt Martusciello plunged in from the one yard line putting the horses in front 20-16. In the 4th Dansville would score 3 times for good measure to put the game on ice. Alex West capped a 66 yard drive on a 6 yard pass receptioin from Tom Linzy. Thomas Graves booted the PAT making it 27-16. Then Nick Rosica has a pair of touchdown runs of 15 & 12 yards to put away the 40-16 come-from-behind win for Dansville. The Mustangs will battle the Wayne Eagles in the C & F finals….as Wayne defeated Waterloo 35-32.
Taking a look inside the offensive numbers….for Dansville (2-6) Alex West led the ground game with 13 carries for a 119 yards. He also had a pair of touchdown receptions of 44 & 6 yards, & a PAT conversion. Matt Martusciello finished with 14 carries for 103 yards with a pair of touchdown runs of 6 & 1 yard. Nick Rosica handled the ball 5 times for 36 yards with 2 touchdowns on runs of 15 & 12 yards. Carter Hoffman led Wellsville’s attack with 103 yards on 19 carries, with a touchdown & a conversion. Austin Crawford scored the other touchdown for the Lions on a fumble recovery in the end zone.
