Dansville Girls Soccer : “Wild, Wooly, Overtime Win !!”

Dansville 4 Letchworth 3 (O.T.) !

It was the Dansville version of “Saturday Night Fever” as 7 seniors were honored prior to Saturday evening’s girls soccer game at Ralph Clements Field, & wow…what a send-off !! The Lady Mustangs rallied from behind, tied the game late & won in overtime giving the “senior night” honorees & fans a night to remember forever! Dansville coach Arin Belden noted, “well, I can say our game was certainly anything but a sleeper ! We had our 5th overtime game of the season & finally won one!” I’ll add…& what a win it was!!!

That statement by Arin about “a sleeper” might have met with some arguments following the first half of action, & a good deal of the 2nd half as well. The 2 teams were scoreless until the 19:43 mark of the 2nd half. Then, it was lighting the fuse on an “offensive explosion!” Boom!! From that point until the end of the 2nd overtime period 7 goals would be scored ! Letchworth’s Kelsey Hastings went to work for the Indians & found the net twice before Dansville could answer. Hastings would score the initial goal on an assist from Brianna Dake, & then netted another one with 12:55 showing on the timer on a pass from Gabrielle Eustace. It looked like the Indians had taken control. One of the hallmarks of this Dansville girls team has been their ability to “respond” when they’ve fallen behind. This night would be no exception! About 5 minutes later (7:16) the Lady Mustangs sliced that lead in half when Baylee Harnish fired a hard shot on goal that rebounded out in front & Leah Whiteman “cleaned house” making it 2-1. The red & black still had some work to do….& they would do it as well. With less than a minute left to play in regulation (:55) Maddie Farrell booted a direct kick & Grace Wearkley slotted the ball past the diving goalie to knot things up at 2-2 in the backdrop of a “frenzied crowd!”

The game reverted back to its earlier state in the first overtime session as there was no scoring. However, 3 goals would be scored in the 2nd & decisive session!

Dansville opened the scoring this time to take a 2 goal lead….much like Letchworth had earlier in the game. Arin Belden’s club took the lead at the (7:05) mark of the 2nd overtime when Kate Ferguson scored unassisted. The Mustangs doubled their pleasure with 1:23 left when 8th grader Mackenzie Lawless crossed a pass in the middle to Yvonne Ceder who finished it, & Dansville’s scoring. Letchworth wouldn’t roll over & die however as they would strike back in the final minute as Gabby Barber scored on a feed from Elianna Conklin making it 4-3. Dansville’s defense would hang on as the Mustangs celebrated a “fan friendly” win under the lights on this “senior night to remember.” Katie Chan had 5 saves for Dansville & Rachael Meyer had 6 stops for Letchworth as the Mustangs would out shoot the Indians 11-5 in the contest.
Coach Belden added, “It was a very intense & physical game. This was a great win not only for our team, buy also for our seniors. This senior class is truly a special group of young ladies & I couldn’t be happier for them. I was very proud of how our team responded to getting down 2-0, & how we never gave up. This is truly a testament to my girls & their character. This has been something that they’ve continually done all year long, as they’ve battled back on numerous occasions.”

Dansville (5-7) wraps up their season this week with a home game vs. Bath on Tuesday (Oct. 13) at 4:30pm, & then they visit Livonia on Thursday (Oct. 15) at 6:30pm. Letchworth (2-11-1) hosts Avon on Tuesday at 4:30pm, & finish up on the road in Geneseo on Thursday at 6:30pm.
Congratulations ladies !
