Hornell 42 Wayland-Cohocton O
Friday (Sept. 25) proved to be another long night for a maturing Wayland-Cohocton football program as the Golden Eagles hosted a team who has seen both the highs & the lows of high school football in the last few years. Hornell, a recent 3-time N.Y. State Championship program, fell from top to bottom for a very brief period of trasition. I must say that “transition” period was a very brief one until players have learned Red Raiders coach Erik Werner’s system. This year the Red Raiders have certainly regained respectability in every way! The red, white & blue invaded the Sports Complex in Cohocton in week # 4 of the high school football campaign & marched out with a very convincing 42-0 victory over Wayland-Cohocton.
It didn’t take long for the Red Raiders to get things rolling as quarterback Jake Weyand tossed an 18 yard air strike for a score to Jack Henby in the first period. That would be followed up by a Weyand’s P.A.T. kick & then another 5 yard scoring strike making it a 14-0 game after the first. In the 2nd Weyand scooped up a fumble & raced 23 yards for a score from the defensive side of things & the rout was on. The Red Raiders led 35-0 at the half & eased to a 42-0 final to improve to 3-1 on the season while Wayland-Cohocton slipped to (0-4).
Jake Weyand completed 8 of 10 for 91 yards & a trio of TD’s in the victory. Hornell outgained Way-Coh 342 yards to 93 in total offense in the contest. For Wayland-Cohocton quarterback Zach Barnard was 3-5 passing for 23 yards & one pick….& Austin Hamilton led the ground game with 18 yards rushing & also caught a pair of passes for 24 yards in the setback. Hornell tangles with Leroy in week # 5, while Wayland-Cohocton will host Wellsville this Friday night (Oct. 2) at the Elsie Tripp Sports Complex in Cohocton with kidk-off set for 7:30pm.
