She had him at “hello!” A pair of World War II heroes celebrated 70 years of marriage this week. Ninety-one-year-old Steve Stevens first heard the voice of his future wife, radio operator Maureen, in 1943, when he was just 21.
At the time, Stevens was a pilot, and Maureen was guiding him back home after a bombing mission over Germany. Stevens was so intrigued by the female voice at the other end of the line that after landing he went to the air traffic control tower to meet her.
He says he was too shy to approach the “glamorous” Maureen at first, but eventually got up the courage to ask her out. The couple were married eight short months later, at the height of World War II. The rest, as they say, is history! Story courtesy of Daily Mail Online
