Wayland-Cohocton Wins Bragging Rights in B

The Wayland-Cohocton softball squad fell behind at Monroe Community College on Thursday (May 30) afternoon against top-seeded and unbeaten Attica. That circumstance quickly changew when the Eagles erupted for 6 runs in the 5th inning as Way-Coh wound up with a 9-3 win and a Class B Sectional Title as well! Coach Dave Stewart stated, “we made a few mistakes and gave them a few runs in this one, but we have solidify our defense the rest of the way. We’re not going to get away with that against some of the teams we’ll be running into now.”
Attica scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Way-Coh tied it in the top of the third when they mounted a 2-out rally when Hanna Mckelvey walked & stole second, then scored from second on an infield grounder making it a 3-2 Way-Coh edge. The Eagles opened things up with a 6-spot in the top of the fifth. Alyssa Recktenwald, Taylor Welytok, and Jesse Hammers all singled to load the bases. MacKenzie Weber drove in two with a double. Ashlee Shumacher plated another with a sacrifice bunt. Hannah McKelvey followed with a single. Then Bri Sick, Hannah Kuhn, and Alyssa Recktenwald each drove in runs with hits to cap the rally making it now a 9-3 contest. MacKenzie Weber took over from there to close out the previously unbeaten Blue Devils.
Wayland-Cohocton ( 19-4) received a complete game outing from MacKenzie Weber, who worked 7 innings of 4 hit softball allowing no earned runs, while striking out 12 and walked one in gaining the win. Offensively the maroon & gold pounded out 17 hits in the game. Taylor Welytok 3-5 with a double, an rbi, two runs and a stolen base. Jesse Hammers 3-5 with an rbi and scored once. Hannah Kuhn 3-4 with a pair of rbis and scored a run….Alyssa Recketnwald 3-4 with an rbi and scored two runs. Bri Sick 2-4 with an rbi. Mackenzie Weber added a hit with 2 rbis…Ashlee Schumacher had a hit , and a sacrifice. Hannah McKelvey 1-3 scoring a pair of runs. Wayland-Cohocton tangles with Batavia (who defeated Livionia 3-2) on Thursday. Way-Coh and Batavia meet at Brock port State on Saturday. The time has not yet been announced.
