Wayland-Cohocton (V) 7 Falconer (VI) 6

The Wayland-Cohocton girls are going to the final four in Glens Falls on Saturday (June 8th)! The maroon & gold turned around and went back to Brockport State for the second day in a row on Tuesday (June 4) where they rallied from behind again and this time the stakes were higher with the semis & state finals on the line. After coming back against Batavia on Monday, coach Dave Stewart’s team turned the trick again on the Section VI squad from Falconer. As history would repeat itself, Way-Coh went down 3-0 on one swing of the bat as one of the Section VI sluggers put one out of the yard with two mates aboard in the top of the 4th. The Eagles partially responded by getting one run back in the bottom half of the inning. Ashlee Schumacher reached on an error and then consecutive hits by Hannah McKelvey and Mikaela Nielsen would bring Way-Coh’s first run home. The locals would grab the lead in the game as Wayland-Cohocton would play long ball themselves. Taylor Welytok & Jesse Hammers each singled to start the bottom of the 5th. MacKenzie Weber got a hold of one and sent it out of the park putting Wayland-Cohocton in front 4-3 ! Dave Stewart’s squad added to their lead in the 6th by scoring three more times. Alyssa Recktenwald singled & then Taylor Welytok followed with a two-bagger. Jesse Hammers singled to load the bases up. MacKenzie Weber stroked a 2-run double putting runners at second and third. The birds then utilized their speed. As the catcher flipped the ball back to the pitcher and turned to walk back behind the plate putting her mask on, Jesse Hammers sprinted toward the plate and stole home for what would eventually stand up as the game winning run. Falconer scored three times in the top of the 7th and left the lead runners on board when Wayland-Cohocton would finally record the final out in a close call 7-6.
MacKenzie Weber notched the win with 7 strong innings giving up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 10 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. Offensively Wayland-Cohocton (21-4) pounded out 14 hits against Section VI hurlers. Jesse Hammers was 3-4 scoring 2 runs and stole home. MacKenzie Weber was 2-4 with a double, a homer, 5 rbis and scored a run. Taylor Welytok 2-4 with a double and scored twice. Hannah McKelvey 2-4 with a double. Mikaela Nielsen was 2-3 with an rbi. Alyssa Recktenwald 1-3 with a run score. Ashlee Schumacher 1-4 and scored once, and Bri Sick went 1-3 in the victory.
Wayland-Cohocton battles either Solvay or Windsor in the Class “B” Semi-Finals in Glens Falls on Saturday (June 8) morning. Should they win that game, the Eagles would head into the State Finals later that day. Good Luck Golden Eaglettes!
