Keshequa 9 Caledonia-Mumford 2
It took a year, but the Keshequa softball team gained some measure of revenge on Saturday (June 1st) as they toppled Caledonia-Mumford in Livonia to move onto the Far West Regionals with a 9-2 win over the Lady Raiders. The same two teams met in the Class C State Qualifier in 2012 with the game going 10 innings and Cal-Mum prevailing 1-0. In this 2013 match-up the Indians made the first move by scoring three times in the first inning to grab an early lead, they would rally for 2 more in the fourth and four more in the fifth as the orange and black turned the tables this spring for a 9-2 win, and a trip out west.
Coach Martha Blair’s club didn’t hesitate in getting on the board early. The Indians plated three runs in the opening inning to gain the upper hand for the moment. The Red Raiders would not be outdone as they would answer back and score twice in the 4th to turn the game into a one-run affair. Keshequa responded as most good teams do, with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the inning to maintain a 5-2 advantage. The Nunda-Dalton gang broke the game open when they scored four more runs in the fifth inning to give them the eventual final of 9-2. Indians hurler Alex Flint picked up the win in the circle yielding 2 earned runs on just 2 hits while striking out 14 and walking just one. Flint received plenty of offensive support from her teammates who reached Red Raiders pitching for 10 hits in the qualifier. Kristen Jackson, Haley Russell, & Kylie Blanchard led the offensive charge. Jackson was 2-3 with a triple and drove in three runs while scoring once. Russell was 2-3 with double and scored three times. Blanchard was also 2-3 with a pair of doubles. She would drive in two and score two as well. Also with hits in the game were Tessa Gordinier (three runs), Grace Mehlenbacher (one run), Kate Forrester (double), and Gabe Mehlenbacher (two rbis). Alex Flint would also steal a base and score a run in the victory too.
Keshequa plays in the far West Regional on Tuesday (June 4) afternoon when they take on Frewsburg from Section VI at Olean High School with first pitch slated for 3 o’clock.
