Wayland-Cohocton 9 Dansville 1
Most of the runs were scored early & then Wayland-Cohocton’s pitching took over the rest of the way as they would sweep Dansville in their 2013 home and home series after a 9-1 victory at the Nest on Monday (May 13) afternoon. Way-Coh handed the Mustangs a setback in Dansville’s home game at Frontier Field on Apr. 25th and then completed the dual conquest here in mid-May. Dansville scored their lone run in the first & then Way-Coh would score 7 of their 9 in the first three innings to take control of the game on a chilly and breezy afternoon on top of the hill in Wayland.
Dansville attempted to make a statement by scoring a run in the first inning when Brad Quibell doubled & later scored on an error putting the red and black in front, but only temporarily. The momentum swiftly shifted in the bottom half when coach Steve Wager’s group scored four times and really never looked back. Hits by Collin Burke and CJ Ellis set the table. Tyler Brown took advantage of the opportunity with a run-scoring single. After Ben Haszlauer walked, Dan Wilkinson chipped in with a booming double that plated 2 runs as an error would allow the other runner in the inning to cross the plate. The Eagles scored a single run in the second when CJ Ellis singled and Tyler Brown’s two-bagger brought him around. Way-Coh scored a couple in the third when Ben Haszlauer and Spencer Brown each singled. Dan Wilkinson’s sacrifice pushed one across the plate while the other scored on an error. Wayland-Cohocton scored another run in the 4th when Tyler Brown singled and Mike Murphy stroked an rbi single. In the 6th Ben Haszlauer walked and stole second. ..and rode home on Dan Wilkinson’s single making the final a lopsided 16-1 affair.
Inside the numbers for Wayland-Cohocton (14-1, 6-1) they would pound out 13 hits in the game led by Tyler Brown’s 3-3 with two rbis and 2 runs scored. Dan Wilkinson 2-3 with a double, four rbis, and a sacrifice. CJ Ellis 2-3 with a pair of runs scored and stole one base. With one hit apiece were Zach Belanger, Collin Burke (run and stolen base), Mike Murphy (double, rbi), Ben Haszlauer (three runs and two steals), Spencer Brown and Cass McAllister. On the hill a trio of pitchers were used by coach Steve Wager as Tyler Brown recorded the win working 5 innings of two-hit baseball. He struck out a dozen, allowed 2 hits and walked a pair while allowing an unearned run. Spencer Brown threw a shutout inning giving up a hit, two walks, and struck out one. Collin Burke tossed the final inning striking out 2 and walking one in the win that keeps Way-Coh in the running for the L.C.A.A. Division One title. Wayland-Cohocton still has a pretty full slate this week with a home and home series with Wellsville on Tuesday (May 14) and Thursday (May 16), they visit Hornell on Wednesday (May 15) and take on Bath on Saturday (May 18).
For Dansville, they would only muster three hits on the day as Brad Quibell had a double in two trips with a double and scored once. Collin Vogt and Cody Schwann had the other 2 hits for the Mustangs.
