Dansville 48 Letchworth 46

Maybe Dansville head coach Dave Moodie should play the lottery.
Why? Well, in Dansville’s past 2 games he’s called up a junior varsity
player & each time they’ve had a key role in securing a Mustang win! On
Friday night ( Jan. 11) Derek Wampole, a freshman forward was suited up
in varsity apparel & wound up scoring 9 points & grabbing 7 rebounds as
Dansville came from behind & edged visiting Letchworth 48-46 at “the
Corral.” Strangely enough, the red & black led the game only twice. Both
times they took the lead on a Derek Wampole bucket. Coach Moodie
reflected back, “near the end of the 3rd quarter Derek Wampole took down
a rebound, dribbled the length of the floor & got the basket that put us
up by 1. Letchworth hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take the lead back,
& we didn’t take the lead again until inside of 2 minutes left. On that
play Derek hit an offensive put-back & got fouled….& they hit the
free-throw that put us up 44-42 and we never gave up the lead after
that.” The 2nd year Dansville skipper spoke about the 2 recent call-ups,
” well, I though Noah would do well against a team like Warsaw who likes
to play a lot of zone defense & he hit a bunch of 3′s. With Derek
tonight, I felt his height would be a big advantage for us in getting
some needed rebounds, & he did that for us and then some. We’ve been
quite pleased with the way the young players have responded.”
Letchworth took the early lead in the game & managed to stay “one
step” ahead of the Mustangs throughout most of the night. Coach Tim
McMullen’s Indians held an 11-8 lead after one. The lead remained 3 at
the half & then when Dansville took a 1-point lead with :24 left in the
3rd, a buzzer beating 3-pointer gave Letchworth the 2-point lead back
heading into the 4th. The red & white held the lead until that crucial
Wampole “2 plus 1″ bucket in the final 2 minutes of play. Then Dansville
tacked on an Ian Forbes field goal & a pair of free throws from Brandon
Day & Dan Pierce to seal the 48-46 win. Coach Moodie added, ” I’m very
proud of the way we played, & the way we hung in there down the stretch.
We managed to take the lead when it really counted….at the end!”
Dansville ( 4-7) was led by Dan Pierce’s 14 points, Gage Koch
added 11, freshman call-up Derek Wampole scored 9 & had 7 boards…Ian
Forbes finished with 5…Jack Toomey, Brandon Day, & Evan Dieter each
scored 3 in the victory. Dansville has a week off before they visit
Hornell on Friday (Jan. 18) night.
Letchworth was led by Jake Remington’s 14 points, Alex Conklin
scored 12, Shae Ebner netted 11….Curtis Huffman had 6…Brad Bliss
2…& Bryce Hamilton 1.
