Bishop Kearney 47 Hornell 38 ( O.T.)
>
> The opening round of the large schools division of the
> Alleghany-Steuben County Officials Christmas Classic unfoled at Alfred
> State College on Friday (Dec. 28) night at the Orvis Activities Center.
> The Hornell girls put their unbeaten record on the line against a very
> deceptive (1-2) Bishop Kearney team. The Lady Kings’ 2 setbacks came at
> the hands of quality teams from the Buffalo & Syracuse areas, as they
> held a “decided” height advantage over the Lady Red Raiders. Despite
> that fact, it was anybody’s ballgame in the final minutes of the game.
> Bishop Kearney would get hot in the overtime session outscoring the
> Maple City ladies 11-2 to go home 47-38 winners & advance to the title
> game on Saturday (Dec. 29) night against Wellsville at 5:30pm.
> Coach Steve Sleight’s scrappy Red Radiers hung tough throughout the
> game but seemed to “run out of gas” in the extra session as Bishop
> Kearney had 3 players with multiple buckets in the O.T. The Kings took
> the early lead, but could never pull away from Hornell as both teams
> missed some golden opportunities early in the game. The two-tone blue
> took an 11-7 lead after the first, & then grabbed their largest lead of
> the half at 13-7 when they scored the first basket of the 2nd period.
> Once again Hornell held their ground as freshman Chantre Milliner scored
> 5 in the 2nd to keep the Kings in sight as Bishop Kearney led 21-18 at
> the half. After B.K. opened the 3rd with a basket, Jocelyn Acor
> triggered a 6-0 run as she scored all half-dozen points in leading
> Hornell into the lead for the first time at 24-23 with 4:12 left in the
> quarter. The lead would bounce back & forth through the 4th quarter.
> Bishop Kearney took a 4-point lead with less than 2 1/2 minutes left.
> Hornell came back when Jocelyn Acor came up with a steal & a deuce at
> the other end, & then with just :25 left in the game Allison Capluzzi
> iced a pair of free throws that would tie the game at 36-36 & send it
> into overtime. About a minute & a half into O.T. Kearney got hot as
> Kharysma Bryant, Princella McCullogh, & Emmanuella Edoka each had
> multiple scores to give B.K. an 11-point lead as Hornell failed to score
> until just before the buzzer sounded when Allison Capluzzi hit a basket
> that was far too little too late in a 47-38 Kings victory.
> For Bishop Kearney (2-2) Kharysma Bryant finished with 16 points,
> 11 of them in the 2nd half…..Emmanuella Edoka had 11….Princella
> McCullough netted 10 while Arianna Smith & Skyler Gausney-Jones each
> had 4….& Sheila Hawkes 2. Bishop Kearney battles Wellsville for the
> large school title at 5:30pm on Saturday (Dec. 29).
> For Hornell ( 6-1) Alliszon Capluzzi scored 12, Jocelyn Acor 11,
> Colleen Smith 6, Chantre Milliner 5, Kerrigan Lisi 4, & Ali Henby 2 as
> the Lady Radiers tangle with Grand Island in the small school’s
> consolation game at 3:45pm.
