Man steals Wyoming County patrol car – held on $20,000 bail

Jordan J. HerthumA  Churchville man is in the Wyoming County Jail  for stealing a Wyoming County Sheriff Department’s patrol car.

Jordan Herthum, 22, was arrested in the Town of Perry after police say he stole the marked cruiser while the deputy had stepped out of his car to speak with officers from the Village of Perry. Thats when Herthum got into the car and took off.

What Herthum didn’t know is that the majority of patrol vehicles are now equiped with GPS tracking devices that allow dispatchers to track the closest car for quicker response, alert the officer if they are near a specific location, and to keep track of officers for safety reseaons. In Herthum’s case, police followed the car’s GPS signal and was able to locate and stop the vehicle a short distance away.

He  was charged with several violations and DWI after registering a .20 blood alcohol content.

He’s being held on $20,000 bail.
