Cohocton Sports Complex Re-named After Founder

Frank Williams —  Monday, October 8, 2012

The Cohocton Sports Complex is no more. No….nothing happened
there…except a multitude of area people got together on Saturday night
(Oct. 6) & renamed the facility after its founding father & still
caretaker…”Coach”, “Elsie”, “Ozzie”, or whatever you might know him
by. A sign reading “The Ellsworth R. Tripp Sports Complex” was unveiled
before the start of Saturday night’s soccer double-header dedicating
the  grounds that “the man” so carefully cares for them. Elsie Tripp is
a member of the Soccer Hall of Fame & will always be remembered locally
as not only a great coach, but a wonderful human being who’s humility
should be model for athletes, coaches, & all people of this day and age.
His accomplishments, contributions, & achievements are by far, too many
to name. He’s always taken a great interest in young people, sports, &
his community. A very humble “Coach Tripp” took the microphone & quickly
put things in perspective…”I want to say ‘thank you” because to my
family Cohocton has meant everything to us. This complex has been built
by all of you people of Cohocton & the surrounding area. It was you who
contributed money, time, & helped work to put this whole place together.
We built this to help fight drugs & alcohol in our community, & I hope
we’ve done a little bit to accomplish that goal. It was all of you who
still come & work here, & it was you who have put Cohocton on the map.”
Those words were said in typical “Elsie” fashion. I want to say
there are few people who have contributed more to humankind than our
dear, dear friend Elsie Tripp. A large crowd  gathered on the west
soccer field for the presentation & emcee Jim Burke quipped, ” now
that’s a really nice sign there, but now Elsie’s the one who has to dig
the hole to put it up.” The recognition was well-deserved & I’m  certain
all of “local society” would undoubtedly back me on that.
Congratulations Coach Tripp!
