A former court clerk in the Steuben County town of Avoca, has been arrested. The charges stem from an investigation by the New York  State Comptroller’s Office.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department charged, Shawn Wellington, 41, is charged with felony falsifying business records, official misconduct, and petit larceny.

Deputies say the arrest follows an investigation by the sheriff’s department and the State Comptroller’s Office after about a dozen irregularities were discovered during an audit.

They say Wellington allegedly accepted a persons cash payment on a traffic ticket in August of last year.  She then took the cash and then deleted the entry from the court database to hide the fact that she stole the money . Officials did not say how much money was taken.

She was removed from the court clerk her position in September of last year.

Wellington is due back in court next month.
